  • Falkirk Wheel Charity Abseil

    Hi guys,

In June my uncle was diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer; it was quite far developed with several secondaries. He has recently undergone 3 bouts of chemotherapy and while this is reducing the effect the cancer is having on him, it is terminal and he is looking at only a few months.

I've always tried to support cancer charities when possible but having cancer hit so close to home makes me more determined to do something to help. On October 24th my university has organised a sponsored freefall abseil from the Falkirk Wheel in order to raise funds for charity. In this instance, the charity is the Beatson Pebble Appeal, with the funds contributing towards the cost of creating a new cancer treatment and research facility to be built in Glasgow.

I know that with the current economic climate, cash is tight amongst us all, but if any of you would be able to spare some time and a few pennies to sponsor me in this event, I would be very grateful. Any donation of any size is appreciated and guaranteed to help.

    Many thanks,
    Jamie

        Re: Falkirk Wheel Charity Abseil

        Thanks guys, very much appreciated!

It is indeed an excellent piece of engineering. When I first saw it I contemplated asking at university if I could model it for a systems & control project but as I'm just doing an ordinary degree now, no project for me.
And funnily enough, I have looked at the shape of it in the past and thought it was a nice shape for a vertical spinner. Future project perhaps

          Hi Jamie
yes we will definately sponsor you and might bump the donation up a bit if anybody films it and posts it on here with you squeeling like a girl all the way down.
We have also had cancer effect us so we know where you are coming from.

Don't think so Jonno, its not showing up on my Justgiving page anyway. You could always sponsor Major Damage; that could give the construction team building the new treatment facility a hand with things

                Re: Falkirk Wheel Charity Abseil

                Hi guys,

Many thanks to everyone who has sponsored me so far; I'm entirely grateful for every penny and between myself and my mum we've been able to raise just under £800 so far. We're off to do the abseil tomorrow so if anyone would still be interested in sponsoring me, you can do at http://www.justgiving.com/lenny1024

Alternatively, if you prefer to do sponsorship the traditional way where you make your donation after the event has taken place, sponsorship can still be made on my Justgiving page for a good few weeks afterwards.

Hopefully some pictures of me being all manly and fearless whilst dangling from a rope will make their way on to here
