Life on Mars eh. I think there is a better chance of life on that ice moon round jupiter. They need to send a massive drill and get to the water, my money is on finding plentiful life there.

Well i have decided that buying cheap drill bits is a no no. I drilled 7 holes. First with a 4mm bit and it did them all. Stepped up to 8mm and have blunted 3 cobolt bits. I have given up now and will let the engineers do it cos countersinking it will be impossible with the gear i have. Still onwards we go.

The trouble is if the drill gets even slightly hot it will make the material even harder, even hardox. I have drilled it with coolant and a sharp HSS drill, but solid carbide is best.

I was in my garage on saturday and used my pillock drill (Black and Decker). Yes i broke 3 hss drill bits before giving up and going indoors. Santa any chance of a pillar drill next year please, it will save on grief from the commander in chief.

if your going to be doing alot of drilling hardox i would sugest like Ed says and get a set of soild carbide drills think Cromwell do a nice set for not that much, might be abit more than Hss drill and cobalts but wont go nearly as much, and always remember when drilling hardox use some sort of coolant if you dont have any wd40 or owt like that, any neat oil will do, just to keep the temp down on the material and drill

                      Why is Mars getting hotter?
Also I drill ARM steel(Hardox)with HSS drills the best drill I have found is my battery drill on low speed!
Still have to sharpen the drill every other hole but it works.
My daughter said. This forum is like My Space but for really sad people.

Like Craig says - keep the speed down. Pistol drills run too fast, so pulse the drill and apply pressure to the drill bit as it slows down - and use a lot of WD40. This method also works well on titanium.

Mars will soon be fit to live on i recon. Tho not in our lifetime.
