My guess, Botnets.
Made up users to try and fill the site up so it fails with one of those page cant be displayed windows.

They are from the search engines - they crawl through the Internet and collect all the information for Google/Yahoo/MSN so the website appears in their search results. They aren't anything sinister... without them Google and the others wouldn't work!
