              Too late!
Alex, Ive done a rough CAD model of your claw and applied some loads - stress picture on my profile.
Its a very rough test but it shows that where youve drilled your holes are actually in areas of quite high stress.
If you can tell me the actual material, thicknesses/dimensions and positions of your pivots I can make the model a bit better so the results are a bit more meaningful.
How much weight do you need to loose?

The claw is made up of four main parts and 3 internal braces. The 2 side panels are joined together by the internal braces which are then welded. the top and bottom pices are then welded to the side pices and to the braces. The meterial is 3mm steel. On dragonsclaw had to rebuild the body of the bot as it bent from the forces no damage was done to the claw. The body of dragons claw was 6mm ali for the base and 8mm ali for the sides bolted and then welded together. This bent and cracked the 8mm ali sides but the claw was all right so i think that Alex shouyld be allright with his claw.

                    which colour represents stress?

surely the braces Tony mentioned would help to strengthen in these areas

also how do you make such a diagram?

                    Thanks Mark for the help

P.s. total weight is 1.5kg taken 200g out so far
