Just wondering what jobs people took on/tried once they had finished school or any part time jobs for teenagers? something more than a paper round

I worked in a supermarket for a while, then at a computer repair company during university. Garden centres are also popular.

Alot of my mates worked at Tesco - which sounds a bit iffy, but attualy Tesco these days is a good company to get your name in the door at now. They are so big in ALL areas of the market now from IT, meda, business, retail, food, HR, etc its attualy good. One of my mates went to tesco for part time job in summer stacking and tills and even other stuff, 2 years later went to Uni, came out of Uni and now gone for a high up job in marketing at Tesco coz his name was already in the system.

Just dont go to Mc-Donalds whatever you do!!! Its for errrr {Insert Word Here] People.

easy, go to a engineering firm and say im intrested in engineering and also do it for a hobbie they should snap you up has you show intrest

Used to do this when a student: meat-seller in supermarket, doing data entry for the company my mother worked for, emptied tables and washed dishes in a restaurant on the airport, cleaning lady (in a garage (where I also filled in as administrative help), in a cigarette plant, and in our temp employing office (where I also filled in as administrative help)), filling envelops with publicity, secretary work, selling-by-phone (UGH !!YUCK !!)... and all kinds of odds and ends which I cant remember right now.
Basically the first four years I did manual work during summer vacation, and focused on finding more desk jobs during the rest of the year. (Had to live, didnt I ?)

It helped me find my first real jobs that I could show them how industrious I was, that I wasnt afraid to get my hands dirty and would take work when available. I learned to know and appreciate manual workers, whereas most of my fellow students despised such brutes. (Horrible but true, at uni we were imbued with the sense that we were somehow superior...) In all of my later jobs I have always had the best of relationships with the manual labour, to the amazement of the desk force. Which most often meant that I could get things done faster than the others just because I knew whom to ask and because the workers liked me. Weird really.

Yesterday our building manager did the rounds in the company introducing a student of 17 years old going to do his very first student job, and I started a round of applause because I feel this merits celebrating. Some colleagues were surprised but when I explained it they went hey, yes, in fact, yeah... I mean, in my eyes this boy is achieving something important. Hes going to learn how to work.

seeling stuff on the phone is a good job round here for part timers , about £6.50 an hour

theres not enough jobs for the amount of teenagers though so there so hard to get

I just finished my degree in Computer Animation and even though I have a 2:1 my field isnt quite that simple. Companies only hire you if your good.
The company that I am applying for at the moment didnt even care that I have a degree just that I can produce something good animation wise.
Its looking good and im in the process of making a sample advert for them. If I get it its a 20k starting salary, not bad for a graduate with no experience.
Back up plan is Computer help desk support for Halifax.

Recomendations for getting through student life.....hmmm
Well sometimes getting a job for the summer can be a real pain. Best thing I can recomend is through family and friends.
However thats usually not an option and because you will be a temp full timer till school starts most companies will probably avoid you like the plague. Trust me I know.
last years I was in the middle of my degree. Student loan running low and needed a job. None of the temp agencies would look at me. I applied to around 10 and not one got me anything. No factory, labouring, cleaning nothing! Just because im a smelly student who would return to full time eduction is a three months time.
Now that I have finished my degree I went to three and I have two interviews lined up. I didnt apply to more as things look good.
So good luck but I think the best thing to get a job in this dam world is though uber huge companies. Like tesco, minimul training and they always need staff and people keep on quitting.

I think your friend in your profile pic would disagree with you. Lol.
I was mainly giving an example and also because tesco is leading in the supermarket chain catagory.
Funny enough I used to work at Sainsburys in the veg department. I lasted for around two months before I could not take it any more. Esp when they wanted me to count the expired veg in the back.
Lucky if I wanted to go back and work for them I wont be in there bad books as they put my name down as Mario and not Marco.

haha thats my sister and she prefers sainsburys haha just sainsburys didnt have any jobs going when she wanted one and when i got one she was too late in applying because found every one they needed mum was going to have one at sainsburys as well LOL
