A123 Lithium Battery Packs and Spare Cells

Going through the garage we have a huge surplus of A123 packs. They're very well made, ruggedised packs, with soldered (not welded) terminals, glass fiber reinforcement tape, built-in foam padding and thick matt black Turingy heatshrink - no expense spared. Fitted with balance tabs for chargers.

Offers via PM, have a few available - as well as some individual (genuine !) A123 cells. Also have heatshrink should you wish to modify the pack sizes. Currently laid out as

Great batteries, run Storm II beautifully and so long as you use genuine cells, very reliable.

Packs we have are 10s (so about 33v) but could easily be modified.

What sort of size/capacity are they? I'd assume they're designed for heavyweights if they used to run Storm II...
Definitely interested, but not sure if I have any machines that'd suit them!

Lots of additional detail on them here http://terrorhurtz.com/a123. Each cell is 2.2Ah and 3.3v (3.45 at full charge). Much more tolerant to abuse that LiPo's.

£9.99 each on eBay, so getting 10 in a pack for £35 is a bargain !

So tempting but way to high a voltage for me and I wouldn't want to attempt to modify them myself

As long as they have been soldered between the packs, it's not difficult. Get yourself a 150W plus soldering iron and keep the heat on them only briefly and you can take them apart.

Okay fair enough, what are the advantages/disadvantages compared to Lipo packs?

Advantages, longer lifespan , and safer.

Disadvantages, heavier for the same amount of stored power, and a lower voltage per cell.

Thanks Mario, i'm definitely considering a set if there are any left by the time i have the money spare, what type of charger do you need for these? i was going to use a turnigy accucell 6 for my lipos, would this charge these?

Your charger can charge LiFepo4 batteries up to 6 cells.

The Turnigy Accucell will indeed charge A123's, you use the LiFe setting on the charger Sam.

And yes modifying packs isn't difficult, ours are all soldered as Gary says and can be stripped down, reconfigured etc. I would suggest if you want to start playing with packs that you take a look at this.

Clearly you don't need to do quite as much work when you're modifying the packs yourself but it will give you an idea as to what you're doing !

BTW, suddenly loads of interest in the packs, only a couple left.

I should add, that anyone wanting to change the configuration of the packs, I have plenty of heat-shrink that will fit the packs if laid out as .....

if you wanted to make 8 cell packs for example, so long as you have to cells side by side I can throw in some heat-shrink

Terry, between 4 and 6 depending on what people who have expressed an interest in actually buy. I also have around 14 cells packaged and un-used, more than enough to make up some more packs if need.
