Good idea Tim, its nice to know you are trying to get pointers to help you out here.
My advice would be to read battles from the top tournaments (NSBFL, PTT, VFT, FAR, MRWS etc) and see how those people write fights. Some of them may be very long but they can show you what people expect from fights. Id also suggest looking at NSIREC and Mechanical Noise (two new tournaments) to see how new writers have started out.
Im sure other people can give you better tips than this but thats a start.

What I do, Tim, is just read the stats and tactics, picture the fight in my head, imagine whats likely to happen and write down all the moves the robots make, which usually makes for reasonably long writing, though of course this varies with different robots. I try to make it dramatic, as well. For example (Im making up this quote by the way, I dont know if its actually happened):
Wedge Devolution shoved Forcepower Turbo against the wall and flipped it over the fence.
That sounds pretty boring, but it can be changed to:
Forcepower Turbo found itself unable to escape as Wedge Devolution shoved it against the wall! The wedge fired its flipper, and Forcepower went soaring upward, over the fence and out of the fight!
Exclaimation points work wonders.

Although that could be made even more interesting if it said...
ForcePower Turbo managed to get Wedge Devolution on its front wedge and headed towards the arena wall! The sheer power rammed the VFT champion right through the fence! ForcePower Turbo spins in victory and Andy drinks a cup of coffee.
