  • War of the Writers

Some of you might remember while back, I use to occasionally run a little tournament called War of the Writers. A tournament specifically for writers cast aside their words and prove they are the best writer by beating the scrap metal out of the opposition with their best bot.

Well after a rather long absence from the writing scene, I reckon it's time this little tournament made a return, so..... I'm looking for 8 writers to enter their best heavyweight robot. To qualify as a writer, you must have completed a >32 robot tournament (No hypothetical).

A few of you have some prior history I'm aware of that pretty much gets you in straight away if you want to enter, this includes Kody, Stevo, AJ, Joey, Frank, Alex Holt, Matty Haka and Martijn. I know there is a lot of new writers on here, but I've not kept up to date on the tournaments and who's completed what, so if your not on the list, please just post a link to your credentials (tournaments) and I'll add you in

    Basic rules
100kg bots only. (walkers/shufflers/tracks get no weight bonus)
    48v limit
    1000psi pneumatics
    3000psi hydraulics

    Format
Competition will be held in a Round Robin format, every robot will get to fight every other robot, so 4 fights/bot minimum. After the 4 rounds, the two robots with the highest points (explained below) will go into the Grand Final, to fight for the title of best writer!

    Points are awarded as follows:
3 points for winning via KO/Pitting/OOTA/Immobilization
2 points for winning via judges decision
1 points for losing via a judges decision
0 points for losing via KO/Pitting/OOTA/Immobilization

Writers, post your stats in this thread please, I don't want to go forum hunting for them.

      Re: War of the Writers

I'm in I'm sure you know my credentials already but just in case; I completed the Roaring Donkey mini-tournament (8 bots, straight knock out) and the Chevron Championship 1 (36 bots, hybrid knockout/challenges), I am currently hypoing Enjoy The Violence (16 bots, straight knockout) and confidently expect to finish Chevron Championship 2 (72 robots, hybrid knockout/challenges) within the next interglacial period.

I shall enter N³, which you will be familiar with as you helped me with it :P the stats are as follows:

      N³
      WEIGHT: 100kgs
      DIMENSIONS: 110 x 80 x 30 (50 with arm raised) cm
SHAPE: Same as the previous version; the front is a trapezoid wedge with sloping sides, similar to Lightning from series 7. The rear is one continuous quarter sphere.
COLOUR: Dark maroon and dark green chevrons, darker towards the front, and this time with (also rather dark) Mouser Mecha Catbot/Raizer Blade style cyborg artwork at various points.
DRIVE: The main drive comes from a hydrostatic system, powered by a 7.2hp 80cc Stihl disc cutter engine driving two separate hydraulic pumps, one of which runs at 1200psi and uses proportional valve gear to control speed and direction of the two hydrostatic drive motors, and the other running on a different gear reduction at 3000psi to power the weapon rams through standard hydraulic fittings.
There are many advantages to using this system; basically N³ not only has a considerable amount more torque and pushing ability than standard electrically powered robots, it can deliver that torque at both very low and very high speeds, plus all those in between, and still have extremely precise and easy control. To put this in real world terms, look at The Big Cheese, which I got a lot of details for this from; it could drive around hanging a robot from the end of the arm and have no loss of speed or control. Basically this isn't going to bog down when pushing or be outpushed most of the time by other machines; this is serious power.
The drive is through tank style steering and two wheels located just in front of the centre of the robot, as before, this means it turns around the front as oppposed to around the the rear and has two ball transfer units at the rear to maintain stability. The wheels have a layer of urethane rubber on for traction.
SPEED: Average 12mph, maximum is around 30mph. Control and power is constant at all speeds due to the hydrostatic drive.
GROUND CLEARANCE: 0 at front due to the forks, 0-10mm elsewhere
ARMOUR: 3mm (6mm on front wedge) titanium/10% vanadium alloy over a stainless steel box section frame, welded into a continuous shell save for the shock mounted front wedge so there are no individual panels to be ripped off, and 10mm polycarb used for both the menacing 'eyes' located in the sides and behind the main armour in places where vital components like the petrol tank and hydraulic cables need to be protected. The base is 5mm 2014 aluminium.
WEAPONS: 1) Inside the front wedge are a pair of hydraulic lifting forks, shaped somewhat like a cross between Panic Attack's and Haardvark's, these are constructed from hardened steel, stick out a bit beyond the front wedge and are capable of lifting around half a tonne easily. These are used to hold opponents on the front wedge for...
      2) Sticking out of the front wedge is a hydraulically powered (via a 92mm bore/70mm piston dia ram) crushing arm, which has sharp spines on it, constructed from 5mm spaceframe Hardox with 1.5mm titanium/10% vanadium alloy sheet covering and tipped with a hardened tool steel point, running from a hydraulic ram located behind it similar to Executioner, giving about 8 tonnes of force at the tip of the arm.
The aim of the weapons is more to lift opponents (preventing them from getting any traction on the arena floor), clamping them, and taking them to be deposited in the Bank Of Pit, than for extreme crushing damage.
SRIMECH: The top of the robot and the top of the crushing arm have a rollover shape (think M2/Mega Morg) that should allow it to roll over onto its wheels if it gets tipped over. If for any reason the rolling over doesn't work, like it getting up against a wall, moving the crushing arm should change the balance enough to allow it to self right.
NOTES: Internals are shockproofed where possible to reduce shock damage from impacts and spinners.
THANKS TO: Leo van Miert and Aaron Knight for explaining the technology to me and furthering my knowledge of hydrostatics, and to Martijn Benschop for calculating the ram size for the hydraulic crusher. Cheers guys.
STRENGTHS: Very powerful, hydrostatic drive gives torque head and shoulders above most other vapourbots. Decent armour, good weapons synergy, and generally a tough machine.
WEAKNESSES: Someone jamming a potato in the engine exhaust

(btw, if anyone wishes to help my artistically challenged self out by making a good CAD of it, it'd be much appreciated )

          Re: War of the Writers

          I'd like to enter

my credentials can be found as the Head Writer (2 seasons) of ARC (which includes ARC: Aftermath, in progress, and ARC: Carnage). I was also a regular writer (4 seasons) of ARC (ARC: Reckoning, ARC: Redemption, ARC: Revolution, and ARC: Annihilation) all of which have been completed. They have all been <32, when you consider that each season has had 4 weight classes (only one bot per person per weightclass, so that's 4 bots per person) with an average around 9-15 people entering. Each weight class is considered a full tournament, and every season except for ARC: Annihilation has been round robin. ARC tournaments are headed by a staff of writers, however, so just one person doesn't do all the writing, so take that as you will.

www.drowningcity.com <- this is the main site and this

          http://z10.invisionfree.com/Drowning_Ci ... howforum=5

Is where we kept all of the results from the past seasons (except for ARC: Annihilation, as that tournament and the preceding tournaments were unfortunately lost).

Now if I do get accepted, I'd like to enter Flank Attack, who's stats I can't find at the moment, but I'm sure someone has a link to Dave's board or something like that which I 'think' they are held :P

                Re: War of the Writers

                Yay, Aaron stuff!

                Wedge Devolution
SHAPE- low wedge with sloped rear
                COLOUR- sleek and shiny silver
                WEIGHT- about 100kg
                DIMENSIONS- 90cm X 75cm X 30cm
                SPEED- 16mph
                TURNING CIRCLE- 0
GROUND CLEARANCE- 0mm at the front, 7mm for the rest of the robot. Fitted with Biohazard-style skirts on sides and rear, giving 0mm
                ARMOUR- 4mm Hardox
                WHEELS- inside robot, 4-wheel drive
                POWER- 2 X LEM-130s; 3 x 12v 12amp NiCad packs, giving 36v
WEAPONS- As usual, the main weapon is a rear-hinged flipper. This is very similar to Chaos 2, except the blade at the bottom is bent ala Bigger Brother, allowing the flipper to have greater effect against bots with skirts or low centres of gravity. The flipper itself is powered by a pair of 80mm X 20mm high pressure pneumatic rams, each running at 250psi. This should allow Wedge Devo to comfortably flip up to 1 tonne.
SRIMECH- The flipper can right the machine easily and the rear wedge should hopefully prevent a Chaos-style self-flip. Also, Wedge Devo is equipped with a grey semi-sphere on either side of robot to prevent it getting stuck on its side
NOTES- flashing red light on top of robot, flies Scotland flag
STRENGTHS- powerful flipper, fast, manoeuvrable, difficult to get underneath, tough armour, good traction
WEAKNESSES- could prove a bit tricky to control, limited CO2 (like all other flippers :P)
                PIC- http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7555 ... ionza6.png

                  Re: War of the Writers

                  Awesome!

                  Name: Gehenna
                  Weight: 100kgs
Shape: A low to the ground wedge shape, with sloping sides and rear.
Colour: Black bodywork with a dark blue flipper.
                  Length: 800mm
                  Width: 800mm
                  Height: 200mm
Motivation: Two 150mm diameter 30mm wide wheels made of Aluminium 7075. Each wheel has an Asmaprene urethane rubber tyre for extra grip on the arena floor.
                  Drive: 2x S28-400 Magmotors running at 26.4v from 40x A123 Lithium-Ion cells.
Turning Circle: 0mm using a tank style steer.
                  Speed: 15mph
Ground Clearance: 0mm at the front and variable leading to 10mm at the rear.
Armour: The wedge is made of an 8mm Titanium/Vanadium alloy. The sides, rear and base are all 6mm Titanium/Vanadium. The flipper itself is made of 4mm Hardox.
Weapons: The main weapon is a front-hinged flipper, like Firestorm and Envy. It is operated by an 80mm bore 100mm stroke ram. This is run at 145psi on CO2 and the gas is stored in a 2.2kgs canister. This should provide plenty of quick and powerful flips. The flipping plate has an edge to stop robots driving up and over the wedge shape. The secondary weapon is at the rear - it is a 650mm diameter horizontal spinning bar with a 2kg weight at each end. It is powered by an S28-400 Magmotor and spins at 2450rpm from a 2:1 ratio. It weighs 10kgs and is capable of dishing out 22kJ.
Self-Righter: The flipper is used to self-right Gehenna. The sloping panels mean that it always lands on the flipper if inverted.
Notes: Thanks to Joey for his help.

                          EQUINOX

BODY SHAPE: Box with 30* wedge at the front and angled rear ala Tornado like >. Sides are 45* to deflect spinners.

                          WEIGHT: 100kg

                          DIMENSIONS (L X W X H): 95cm x 70cm x 9cm

COLOUR: Dark blue with yellow skirts and forks

LOCOMOTION: 4 x internal wheels, each is 80mm in diameter and has vulkalon tyres for grip. They are mounted on a slant ala Tazbot for extra control. Instead of one in each corner they are mounted at the rear and middle of the machine, with two ball castors in the two front corners. This gives very good manouevrability, allowing Equinox to really glide around the arena like Panic Attack.

GROUND CLEARANCE: 0 at the wedge, effectively 0 at sides and rear due to skirts, but 10mm behind them.

SKIRTS: 5mm grade 2 titanium skirts at the sides and rear, joined by 4mm hardox hinges to stop them breaking.

                          DRIVE MOTORS: 4 x S28-400 magmotors run @ 24v

DRIVE BATTERIES: 4 x NiCad battlepacks at 24v in parallel

SPEED: 15mph, designed to be very fluidly controlled

                          TURNING CIRCLE: 0 metres

BODY ARMOUR: 6mm grade 5 titanium/vanadium 10% alloy monocoque. The removable panel is the top panel, but this is mounted on rubber bolts, rendering axes and hammers useless.

                          CHASSIS:

WEAPON 1: Running down the front wedge and flat along the floor are two 60cm long lifting forks, each powered by its own linear actuator, capable of rising to full height in 2 seconds, fast enough to be effective, but slow enough for controlled lifting.

WEAPON 2: Running along the top of the robot are two sets of Mute-style tungsten carbide barbs to trap opponents. Also hinged at the rear of the robot is a 95cm long clamping arm with a serrated tungsten tooth at the end of it, this is powered by an S28-400 magmotor @ 24v and is usually raised to vertical and then used to clamp opponents in place, can be used in unison with the lifting forks and barbs to good effect.

SRIMECH: The clamping arm can right the robot in 1 second.

STRENGTHS: Excellent manouevrability, controllability and pushing power, weapon synergy, tough armour

THEME SONG: Meet Me on the Equinox by Death Cab for Cutie

Name - Back to Rock III

Shape - See picture, it€™s a box with a scoop at the front and a rounded back. The front is higher than the back and has an €œarc€ like Behemoth had, all for more efficient self-righting.

                              Weight - 100 Kilogram

                              Speed - 18mph

                              Dimensions - 90x84x33 cm

Ground Clearance - 0 underneath the lifter and skirts, 5 mm everywhere else.

                              Power - 2x LEM130s at 48v

Movement - 6 wheels, about 12 cm diameter

                              Turning Circel - Zero

Weaponry - A big rear-hinged lifting arm, basically the red part of the picture. It is powered by a single LEM130 at 36 V, which a €œpinion and rack€-mechanism. A pinion around the LEM€™s axle moves up a rack that€™s joint to the lifter about halfway its length. The fancy part is that this runs through a gearbox, with 2 gears. One gear is for powerful and controlled lifting and moves up the arm in about 2-3 seconds, another gear is for quick self-righting and moves up the arm in 1 second.

The two plates at the bottom run almost parallel to the ground and are arranged in the way they are (split in the middle, see picture) for the secondary weapon to come into play, a Pussycat-style vertical diamond-edged sawblade, powered by a S28-150 Magmotor at 24 V spinning at 4000 rpm. The blade is part of the lifter and thereby damages the opponent€™s underbelly while lifting it. The sawblade slicing its way INTO (more or less) my opponent will enhance my grip on it and increase my control over my opponent, which is good.

On both sides of the bot is a 7 mm titanium skirt.

Armour - 5 mm titanium at the bottom, 7 mm titanium everywhere else

Srimech - The lifter self-rights the robot when needed

Strenghts - Nice weapon synergy, high traction, can really control an opponent
Weakness - Untested lifter concept, easy to get under from rear, not as agile as 4WD or 2WD bots
