  • How Could I Improve...

Right...would you still be able to get comparable power out of a petrol weapon drive for less weight?

(I know Typhoon had practical problems, but purely looking at the stats)

Power to weight wise for robots you cant beat internal combustion engines. If you only look at stats.

Given Liam decided on building an FBS, I decided on doing the same thing, and since Ive been building many flippers, rammers and spinner-killers, I thought Id design an FBS that cuold stop anything from rammers to flippers. Ill point you to... (Joke is intended :wink

        KOM-PASSED

        € WEIGHT: 100kg.

€ ARMOUR: 6mm Hardox on the rear, top, front and sides. 4mm Titanium on the base. Inside, I have 5cm of Vulkanised rubber to make sure its good when facing other spinners and everything inside is bolted in place using Ti/V bolts to prevent things from breaking.

€ SHAPE: A cylinder shape, with a slightly pointed top.

        € MOTORS: 2 x Bosch 750w at 24V = 2HP

        € LOCOMOTION: 4 wet Go-Kart Wheels.

        € DIMENSIONS: (L) 100CM (H) 15CM (W) 100CM

€ COLOUR: The body around the edge is black, and on the top is an arrow facing forward, coloured red.

€ WEAPONRY: A 45kg shell - the shell is 37kg, but the 8 teeth weigh 1kg each. The shell rotates using 2 x LEM130€™s at 36V, and using a gear reduction of 1.13:1, it can rotate up to 3200rpm max. It can produce 230kj at maximum revolution (takes around 3.5 seconds to do so) but is lethal in 1 second, when it€™ll do 1600rpm, and when it generates 115kj per blow. I can lock the speed to 1600rpm if things get worrying. The teeth on Kom-Passed are Hardox teeth, blunted but with curved hooks attached to form a T shape. There are 4 x 10cm long teeth on the North, South, East and West sides, and in between them are 4 x 5cm long teeth, each tooth is mounted 2mm from the ground to provide protection.

        € SPEED: 20mph

€ GROUND CLEARANCE: 8mm all around, but since the teeth on all sides are 2mm off the ground, anything that comes into contact will be slammed away.

€ STRENGTH: Good armour and an awesome weapon.

        € WEAKNESS: No self-righter.

Tell me if theres something wrong.

Well the Hardox Shell alone is already 60kg, not 37, and thats without the teeth.

Adding vulkanised rubber as shockmouning on a spinning surface is a bad idea. The friction that that will generate can cause your robot to burn.

OK - The shell is changed to 1cm of Titanium - I think thats 37kg in weight - and the rubber is removed, and replaced with Titanium foam to be placed around the electrics and not the shell.

The shell in Titanium alloy of 1 cm is 33-34kg depending on the alloy (you dont want to use pure Ti for that).

What exactly would Ti foam do in your application? I only know of Ti foam for use in the medical community as part of artificial bones and joints, because it is lighter than solid Ti and still very strong. Not for its bounce. If it is for schockmounting, wouldnt PU foam be a lot easier?

I was thinking that Ti foam would be rigid...

                  And you would be right.

Actually I made a mistake in calulation since youve made the shell thicker the weight of the shell is higher than the 34kg i calulated before. I wrote 1 cm but calculated 6mm like the hardox shell.

So here it is correctly i hope. Feel free to check the numbers.

                    side:
                    100cm diameter * Pi * 15cm height * 1cm wallthickness= 4710cm3 = 4.7dm3

                    Top:
                    50cm radius * 50cm radius * Pi * 1cm wallthickness = 7850cm3 = 7.8dm3

                    7.8 + 4.7 = 12.5 dm3

                    4.2kg/dm3 Ti * 12.5dm3 = 52.5kg

...this is why I dont design big spinners. :P

I do have another question (cue groaning); Would it be practical to use carbon fibre honeycomb sheets (like this: http://www.robotcombat.com/products/carbon_fiber_sandwich_composite_sheets.htmlhttp://www.robotcombat.com/products/...te_sheets.html ) as armour, provided you supported it adequately?

If you dont mind having huge gashes in them from spinners, you could.

i think 3.2 hardox is as good as anything available. you dont need it any thicker and placed in the right places instead of all over the robot you would save loads of weight. rubber mounted ali on top for hammers and axes and hardox outer shell would be very good. you will be surprised what you can do if your robot isnt all 10mm ti and 10mm hardox.

I agree, although 3.2mm Hardox 450 will not keep everything out (Tiberius comes to mind).

Steve had something called Chameleon once, if I recall...and if the tyres are covered, how can some setups be invertible? For that matter, how can tracks have tyres? :P
