  • AJWars: A New Era...

OK then! I€™ve been chatting to people recently and €˜behind the scenes€™ I believe that we all really want to come down from these crazy uber-bots and get back down to basics. Basically, this tournament it sort of a launch pad to try and influence writers and designers to take a step down from the Hardox armoured, LEMCO drive train, walking full body spinners. Lets get back to the simple €œyou build it - I€™ll believe it€ mentality with some cool wedges, MagMotor drive trains, Titanium armoured with a nice pneumatic flipper etc.

It€™s apparent people are running out of ideas, and tournaments are stumbling a bit with the same thing being entered over and over again. Its time to get creative and see what we can produce again.

The rules of this tournament are the same as usual, however I€™m looking for realism, I€™m looking for some cool ideas, I€™m looking to step down from the €œlets build a tank to stop MDU€ days. If anything is too over the top, it won€™t be allowed to compete. That doesn€™t mean to say you have to get designing a brand new robot, I think it would be interesting to see a few people also possibly €˜de-evolutionising€™ their current bots to fit the bill.

All I€™m looking for is maybe 8 people to enter one vapour bot each, real robots are obviously not permitted as they kind of defeat the object.

This is a call for everyone to bring FanFic back to its glory days! Lets have some variation, some interesting designs, back to basics. Maybe then we can influence the big tournaments to follow along and we can have some fun again.

    Hope this generates some interest!

            AJWars: A New Era...

            B2B (Back 2 Basics)

            Weight- 100.6kg
            Dimensions- L-75cm W-54cm H- 36.5cm
Speed- 8.5mph/ 3.8 m/s. This however still gives excellent acceleration and the speed of the hits will help us do the Tornado thing
Shape- Normal Wedge, with rollbars on the back panel made from welded 1cm titanium.
Locomotion- 2 x 270mm diameter wheels with custom cut treads from an old adapted Go-Kart
Ground Clearance- 0 at front, 0 underneath hinged skirts at sides, 4mm underneath skirts and at back.
            Turning Circle-0
Power- 2 x 36V Dustin Motors running off 3 x 24V TMC batteries weighing a total of 9kg for the batteries plus 2.6kg for the motors (Lightweight or what). It gives a total (Presuming efficiency is at maximum) of 4.42BHp. Not the best shover, but with the wedge shaped, the idea will be that before pushing you scoop the wheels off the ground.
Armour- 7mm Titanium/Vanadium Alloy all around weighing a total of 28.4940747kg for the whole body. The titanium bars on the back weigh a total of about 8.4kg.
Chassis- The chassis is made of 1cm aluminium bars, and weighs around 12kg.
Weapon 1- The weapon is a Helium powered flipper, with 2 x 3kg helium rams, capable of firing about 40 times within the course of a fight, and despite running off just 400psi, is easily capable of flipping 250kg. The rams in total, plus gas, and bottles etc. weighs around 16kg and the actual flipper is made out of 4mm Titanium/Vanadium alloy and is around two-thirds the width of the body and goes up the whole wedge. It weighs 5.022kg.
Weapon 2- the bottom of the front wedge is an entirely detachable wedge made of 1cm aluminium. It€™s been designed to be heavy enough to prevent the front wheelying when driving, and therefore means that it should be simple to flip any robots over. It covers about 10cm of the wedge, and is more than capable of resisting attacks. It€™s been designed well and uses the force of gravity and balance to keep it down, whilst only weighing 3.288384kg in total.
Removable Link Position- In a hole with a swinging flap about 10cm into the back panel, but you have to get past the rollbars to get to it.
Srimech- The flipper acts as a self-righter, and will always land on his wheels thanks to the rollbars on the back, once we self-right. The only time this won€™t work is if we can€™t get enough pressure in the ram to fire us over.
Strengths- Powerful, long-lasting weaponry. Manouvreable. Flipper should never fail to slide underneath.
Weaknesses- Not the best pusher in a straight shoving battle.

            Weight Distribution-

            Chassis- 12kg
            Armour- 37kg
            Batteries- 9kg
            Motors- 2.6kg
            Locomotion- 9kg
            Weapons- 7kg
            Weapon Power-16kg
            Electronics-8kg
            TOTAL- 100.6kg

                      2) Martijn - Reserved
                      3) Willow - Back 2 Basics
                      4) Kody - Dysfunctional 2.0
                      5) Alex - Reserved
                      6) Chris - Die-Ceratops Re-Invertus
                      7) ?
                      ?

Sorry I was a bit brief on the rules, by the usual I meant FRA Rules. The structure of the tournament will be simple one-on-one knockouts. Tim, I€™m afraid I cannot accept stats in the FRW format so at the moment you don€™t have a place. Kody, a picture of Dysfunctional would be handy please. And for Chris, shall I base your drive train upon S28-400 MagMotors? Otherwise everything is going great, thanks all!

Can you? Ive never really understood the technical details for a while now. Thats the main reason why I thought removing the bit in the real Robot Wars where the teams were introducing their robots was a bad idea.

I believe there should be a picture of DC-RI in the C&B2 tournament as well, somewhere.

@Chris: http://magmotor.com/brushed/brushed.htmlhttp://magmotor.com/brushed/brushed.html Give you all the information you need to know about Magmotors :-) If you want less detailed, go here: http://www.robotmarketplace.com/marketplace_magmotors.htmlhttp://www.robotmarketplace.com/mark...magmotors.html

Plenty of information on the interjet

Also, 3 x 12v batteries? Are you running 3 in series for 36v? or 3 in parallel for 12v?

@Matty: 2 x 36V Dustin Motors running off 3 x 24V TMC batteries Can you explain this a bit, something Im sure Ive asked you before, but cant remember. Are the motors run at 24v or 36v? If your running 36v, Im wondering how you get it from 24v batteries. If your ran the 24v batteries in parallel, you would have 24v, if in series, you would have 72v... Which is it? Got a link to the batteries? I might be able to find a solution for you.

Slightly off topic. Now that I have myself a wonderous server with some php/mysql, I might look at finally working on that rough fanfic bot designer tool I started around 2004...

ah, stuff it, change it 3 x 12V. The batteries are 2 kilos lighter each... add a couple of extra layers of paint.
