I thought, that as I started a thread for the great Merlin [Which was active for a while], so Im starting a thread for the greatest piece of engineering in real robot history!.

Comment about the works that go into the Titanium Titan, and give your views on it.

PS. I know about the motors - but what else gives the awesome speed and power?:new:

a nice machine, great concept but far from the best engineered. I dont mean to put storm down i just personally think that its not an engineering masterpeice. Machines like Beta, BIg Nipper and Warhead... now we are talking! Storm is a nice well armoured machine.

Id have said the speed controllers were some of the best engineering ever in the sport. IMHO

beta now there is an engineered marvel. shame it doesnt run. i have been bugging john to get it running but its just not that simple. warhead again is an awsome machine and looks alive when in battle. i for 1 wouldnt mind envy getting ripped to bits by it. and big nipper has always been one of my favourite robots the day i laid eyes on it. its just so well engineered and gives such pleasure to watch. a very formiddable opponent as i found out in the uk champs. storm 2 we fought in series 7 and it battered us from arena wall to arena wall. it is a very powerful robot. the greatest piece of robot engineering in robot history i have to disagree. i think the title of titanium titan has to go to big nipper. the greatest piece of robot engineering for me has to go to beta. you said what else gives the awsome speed and power, well it is the motors. in all storm 2 is a very good robot but there are much better engineered robots out there.

Storm II is very well engineered. Wether it is the best engineered ever is debatable (imho it is not) but the power in a robot with such small dimensions is an engineering marvel in itself.

The other robots mentioned are awesome, but it does not deminish the thought and work that has gone in Storm II.

all robots are an engineering marvel in their own right. and do not deminish the thought and work that has gone into every robot out there. it will always be a debate to which is THE best engineered

I agree that Big Nipper may be better than Storm 2,
but I just believe that the amount of power it has is down to super-engineering

now i have been thinking about it. i must give trevor wright a mention for engineering. there he has 2 robots, mighty mouse and velocaripper. they have been so well engineered they run and run and run. he himself has done most of the electronics if not all, and for the most enduring and consistent robots on the planet he gets my vote every day. now thats engineering

Im really struggling to agree with anyone here, because Storm 2 is my favorite robot, which since the RW World Championships has usually cmoe stuck due to bad luck.

just 1 more post before i go and get some work done.

been browsing profiles and if you look at john reids profile i think we all know who is the real daddy of engineering. team bud refer to him as the oracle because he knows all. case rested

                          Storm 2

                          Hi Paul,

thanks for vote of confidence for Storm II, greatly appreciated.

Storm II certainly raised the bar when it was built (remember that Storm II was built back in 2001 and it€™s structure hasn€™t really changed since day one, in fact it€™s never even had a new chassis). There are aspects of it which are still ground-breaking, the speed controllers for which we have to thank Dave Gamble from Tornado are for example still second to none. Storm II get€™s it€™s power and agility thanks to some very careful modeling and planning before it was built. The drivetrain, speed controllers and motors were all picked and modeled (in just the same way that Beta€™s performance was modeled by John) to ensure a balance.

The robot is designed to have a central, low centre of gravity with attention paid to weight distribution left and right as well as front to back. The ramps in the speed controllers and adaptive current limiting are all there to ensure that the robot remains as controllable as possible. The weapon system bolts in and out and it totally interchangeable (more on that later)

Over the years a few things have changed, the lifting arm and now most recently a self-righting mechanism have been added - and we don€™t mind saying that there€™s more potential in the future with an electric axe mechanism being looked at as well as the potential for a hydraulic claw.

Storm II is certainly a well rounded machine, and one that has remained very competitive for 6 years, but the best engineered€¦ I doubt it - but it€™s certainly one I€™d still put in my top 5 machines currently active in the UK most likely to win any given competition.

Some of the robots mentioned above by others are real works of art, just working with the Titanium armour on Storm II was tricky so to me Big Nipper is a remarkable feat of engineering.

Id say John Reid has a justifiable claim on best engineered robot with Beta and THz (and he had significant influence on the design of our arm mechanism - thanks again John). Ive never seen Warhead live but certainly impressed by the footage I have seen

                            Storm 2

So its basically designed around a racing car, in that the weight layout means good dynamics.

Interchangable weapons? That would be good, allowing for Storm 2 to be in the same class as Torando (or better) .

Ive been reading a thread in the General Chatter called Robots Live! End of the year which says youre seeded for next time.

So could anyone tell me how my favorite rammer did?

                            :sad:PLEASE?

                              Storm 2

As Tim said above, as all the events over 2007 average Storm II is probably in the top 5 robots in the UK. In opinion it is goes as follows.
                              1)Big Nipper
                              2)Thz
                              3)Tiberious 4
                              4)StormII
5)Envy / Kronic (cant decide - Evny has been very much improved over the year, Kronic has had its problems but generally solid)

Maybe slightly different if I spent more time on it. So sorry if ive missed someone obvious off my list. This is just from 2007 obviously.
