though I think Air has a better setup for that, the new gravity is very powerfull, but has a much shorter stroke than Air.

all im going to say is that if u want to see some serious spinner action then watch the whole of series 7, some very nice incidents with a lot of damage

Gary, Tell me what would happen if gravity flipped you out of the arena and onto the polycarb 6 foot up? Do you think you would just bounce off or smash right through it into the crowd. Which then is more dangourous the flipper or the disk?

Do they need a stonger arena for next year?

Theres a lot of give in the screening at RW, Its very unlikely that a robot would make it through the screen.
A problem would be far more likely to arise from a supersonic chunk of someone, smaller surface area.. and therefore far more likely to cause a problem.

As to do they need a stronger arena.. well inner arena yes definitely, its failing on a regular basis at this point.
I think the screening solution they use is pretty damn good though..

Yeah the screens do sway a bit, like Sam said, they have a bit of give. There suspended above and just rail way sleepers (Or something more posh) to stop them swaying too far.

But Robot Wars another another safety Issue other than the inner defence being bashed and smashed.
Like i said above the screens are suspended and will sway.... what happens if a robot is flipped out the arena and goes out of control?
Yes it happened, and near was serious at Robot Wars. A robot was flipped out and was stuck had alot of radio interfeance and was moving about, and the screens were being pushed back and the big weights stopping the screens from moving too much, were moving back. Luckly the robot had its link pulled out before it got serious.

if we hit the large screens at full speed they WOULD shatter like glass, the disc wouldnt stop spinning and derek wouldnt be very happy.

they do need a stronger arena

wot could actually happen is if one of our cutters inbedded itself in the sidewall then we could roll along the screen like a wheel going sideways

I think Mentorns crew have a new nightmare since Series 7... namely: Series 8.
Just imagine... a stronger and improved Gravity or Air against a stronger and improved Supernova or Typhoon... either flipper or spinner is going to fly and would the screens hold it ? We now know the arena couldnt.
During the filming of Series 7 I overheard discussions between crew, organisers and judges, stating clearly that the crew was terrified from the beginning of the qualifiers that the arena wouldnt hold and that the new and/or improved batch of robots is a whole different thing than before, absolutely demanding a general rethinking about safety for both crew, roboteers and audience.
Its going to cost Mentorn more money, but OH BOY are the fights this year impressive !! Especially with the spinners. You guys are top entertainment.
