  • Robot Power Wasp Problem

    Hey there everybody, I recently fitted a Robot Power Wasp 10A ESC into a model locomotive that I have converted to R/C. All well and good, except one very annoying problem: When moving backwards near full speed the ESC stops and starts, making it judder. I've calibrated it like it says to in the instructions but nothing seems to stop it. Any ideas?
    Using a Spectrum AR400 receiver and NiMH 10 cell battery pack.

    The two most likely causes I can think of are that the transmitter is sending an 'out of bounds' signal at maximum reverse throttle. If the signal is not within specifications, the ESC might respond by shutting down, I have seen that happen on some ESCs. The easy to fix that is with rate limiting to less than 100% speed.

    Another possibility is that the batteries can't supply enough current to run the train at full reverse and their voltage sags to a point where the ESC logic resets. You can test that be running the train off the tracks with no load; if it runs without juddering, you may need higher capacity batteries.

      I've just tried the loco with a spare AR610 receiver and it worked perfectly so it's definitely something to do with the AR400. I will try rate limiting to see if that helps, thanks for the advice

        With the AR610 it works with the levels set at 100%, no fiddling required. As you suggested I rate limited the AR400, in my case to 85%, and has so far worked a treat. Thanks!
