Would anyone know if the Ragebirdge speed controller would work with scooter motors?

Yes, it will. Scooter motors are a tad bigger than battery drill motors.

The MY1016 works perfectly with the Tz85A in high stall apprications.
The Sidewinder survives Bosch 750, Iskra 1.2Kw and the MY1020 in normal robot wars limits.

I do have another question and I'll just post it here but, what is a good active weapon for someone who has never built a bot with an active weapon? I've built a couple wedge bots and that's about it, but since this is a Heavyweight I want it to have some sort of active weapon.

It depends on your knowledge and/or acces to machining time.

But for a beginner, an electric lifter is easy enough.

If you're aquinted to industrial pneumatics, a low pressure lifter or even flipper is doable.

Disks/drums/bar spinners seem mechanical easy to do, but once you get useable powerlevels, it needs a lot more than some cast iron bearing blocks and a semi lined up shaft carrying an old flywheel from a car.

And the least easy to do right, hydraulics.

Yeah, I definitely want to avoid any spinning weapons.

I have looked at the riobotz and other bot building books and looked online resources, and have an idea how pneumatics work.

I've always been a fan of Donald Hudson's Diesector and his more recent bot Lockjaw, would a jaw like weapon be something a beginner could do?
