    Powerdrives Burning out Roboteqs

£950 for a car? Add a decimal point in there somewhere and youve got the price of mine.

As for weird engine noises, I find turning the radio up tends to cure them.

Steve, I did try that but even Meatloaf and Bat out of Hell loud enough to make the blood run out of my ears was not loud enough to cover up the engine noise.

Was that all that was left? Not much to go on if trying to fix it methinks.
If the oil you put in this morning emptied that quick my expert diagnosis was that you didnt have a leak, it was a gaping hole. BTW what was the repair that Toyota allegedly made? Dont get rid of the old engine until you check what they did (thats if that section is still in one piece).

Heres a tip....... before you remove the old engine take off the oil filler cap and look down the tube. If you see something that looks like mayonnaise then your head gasket went. A thin coating is OK for this time of year but not if its thick.

no, a very expensive VVTi engine. Never let it be said that Toyota make cheap cars.

Look at my profile for a pic of poor broken conrod.

BTW where is the big end? Have you found it? Or for that matter the piston?

lol, no idea where the pison is. maybe that was one of the items that I ran over in my haste to escape the scene of mass distruction.

The big end, or what remains of it is on my forfile. I know the pics bad but I know that you will forgive me. I cant be good at everything you know.

What oil problem is this? I cant find a previous thread on it. Is it the new model or old model, or both, Avensis? Is it just the 1.8 or is the 2.0 affected also?

So far it only seems to affect the 1.8 VVTi engine, people with Celicas and MR2s have also reported problems so it must be an engine design fault, so far I think only people with old shape Avensis have had the problem but since its the same unit in the new Avensis it wouldnt suprise me if in a couple of years they too may have the problem. 1.6 and 2.0 VVTi engines dont seem to have the problem but it could be because fewer people own them so no one has to report the issue on the forum. Basically its something to do with the cylinder lining if I remember from a previous thread but the cars with the trouble are burning over a litre of oil every 1000 miles which is more than what the manual classes as acceptable.

Mike, exactly the same thing happened to me in a Renault Fuego back in 1990. I was doing 85mph passing a mini on the motorway and BANG. All the oil came out of a fist sized hole in the block and spewed over the exhaust manifold - the smoke covered all three lanes! Bought a second hand renault 18 engine from a scrapyard, fitted it and then quickly flogged it.
