  • Starter Motors (don't groan).

Hi. Could anyone tell me anything about bike starter motors, particularly the PM ones with a planetary gearhead. Like, how much power do they produce? How much current do they draw? Which kind of bikes can you get them off? How much do they cost (from a scrap yard). Also, any information about aircraft starter motors (especially with gearheads)would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Starter Motors (dont groan).

team black hole had used honda PM starter motors. 12v
current at max efficiency ca. 80 A.
    Stall Current 300A.
    Power max. 1200W,
weight ca 1,5 kg. incl. planetary gearbox with hardened pinions and gears
    ca. 1400 rpm
    costs (scrapyard) ca. 50 euro
Its highly recommended to isolate the minus pole brush from the case.

    Regards, Helmut

thats actually not too bad. my starters took a whole lot more current. They sucked a 40Ah SLA dry to the bone in 4.5 minutes.

      Then again, they werent PM.
