  • Anger issues

OK guys, wired Anger up for the first time today.
The left hand motor didnt move. The right hand motor accelerated up and just span at a constant speed with no response to the remote. The remote was working cos I could flash the power light on and off.
I thought I must just have the RC plugs in the wrong place, so I swapped them around a few times, trying different combinations.
Got it where the right motor was still spinning without any response and the left one was twitching slightly moving the left stick...then the Wotty smoked.
So I need. A) Some advice and help on what the hell is wrong with it.
and B) Ian Watts' contact details.
    Ta muchly.

Check the power feed in, make sure its the correct polarity, thats the only thing i can think of. Ian will be in Dublin until Sunday, so won't be able to get back to you.

1st thing (apart from the smoke to cheq each drive) just put a battery to each motor just to test each motor 1st ok

then you will have to make syre you are connected right + and - are ok

      then the watty

        Re: Anger issues

Thanks for the replies. I shall do a complete re-check of everything. On hold for now until I get the Wotty fixed. Have emailed Ian, I'll just wait for when he gets back to me.

OK, think we've solved it. Basically I was told by 2 other roboteers (I won't name and shame them, lol) that the red plug on the Wotty was the battery one, but now they reakon it's actually the grey one and I had them plugged in the wrong way round. So it wasn't actually my fault.
Anyway, after the Wotty let off a little smoke, it was still running, but I obviously pulled the link to cut the power pretty sharpish. Is it worth plugging it in again with the plugs the right way round this time to do another test? Or should I get the Wotty checked out first because of the smoke before I try anything with it again?
          Professional opinions please.

Don't do this. If a component has failed shorted, powering up again will do more damage. Get it fixed first smoke from power electronics generally isn't a terribly good sign, lol.

              Re: Anger issues

Three other roboteers have said the opposite. If it's already broken, plugging it in again won't damage it, so try it, it might still be working.
I've had speed controllers and speedo boards smoke before and then work perfectly well afterwards.

                Re: Anger issues

Just tried it again with the plugs the right way round. No smoke or anything, all went ok. Still doesn't work though.
I have a faint whining noise from the motors, suggesting the power is getting through, but neither responds to the remote. I have 2 lights on the Wotty, one red and one red flashing, and the light in the reciever is also flashing. The power light still responds to the transmitter.
I didn't get a manual with the Wotty so I don't know what light means what.
Any advice on that one? Thanks, Dave.

Dave you have my sympathies. At least we got 1 event out of our new RoboteQ before it packed up.To not even make it to a finished robot stage is bad luck of Stagefright proportions.

Ha, Clive, wait til you see it in the arena, it can only get worse! lol
Have spoken to Mike and Ian via Dave Weston, tried a few things, getting the Wotty sent off soon. It should be all be quite fixable though....apparently. So, fingers crossed, I'm still on for Barnsley (and the rest of the year).

                      Re: Anger issues

The flashing light usually means that there is no signal from the Reciever it will go solid when it finds the signal. It sounds to me like you have blown the 5V BEC circuit I did something similar by leaving an additional BEC in the reciever. You may have damaged your reciever as well, but try that in a feather or something. You will need to speak to Ian about a repair im afraid, if the receiver does work ok don't be tempted to try it again.

                        Re: Anger issues

Cheers Ed, yeah, Ian said it was a loss of signal thing. Will be sending him the Wotty once he gets in touch when he's back from Dublin. Trying out the reciever in the feather tomorrow, but managed to rebind it to the transmitter earlier, and the power light still works with it, so I reakon it's ok. In fact, it's the same one you whacked with DB5's disc back in Newcastle, and it's been in 4 feathers since, so it's obviously a bit of a survivor, ha.

Still haven't heard from Ian. Sent him two emails for 2 different addresses. I know he's just got back from Dublin, I'm just at that stage in every proud heavyweight builders life where they want to drive their robot for the first time and I can't do til the Wotty is fixed, lol. Should I send another email?
