  • Recommendations on gear MOD

Im thinking of changing Kronic from chain drive into gear drive. Could anyone recommend to me what type of MOD gear I should use? I know that I can get MOD 1, 1.5 or 2 from Technobots but Im unsure of which one to go for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Dave

It all depends on machining capabilities and space you want to use.

In Gravity, IDO and Impact , the KosBoxs run, like the great example Dantomkia, on a Mod 1 gearbox. Up to 20 to 1 in Gravity.
Tough As Nails uses as a small mod(DP 36?) planetairy gear as first stage, the second stage is Mod 1.5

    M2 used a Mod 2 drivetrain.

So I belive you can get away, on Bosches that is, with Mod 1.
Most important thing, make the gearboxes stiff.(but that goes for about all reduction methodes)

I would recommend at least mod 2 as they are more forgiving if they are slightly mis-aligned.

Velocirippa runs smoothly on mod2 gears. Mod1 gears will work OK but you need to be more precise in siting the drive axles, it is not as simple as it at first appears. It will also fit into a smaller space than a gear drive.

My other m/c, Mighty Mouse, has homemade gears. I know from experience that your drive train needs upgrading(heat J semis)

And yes I will be at Portsmouth may 8th and you can have a rematch, gladly

Any more questions about gears e-mail me

Dantomkia uses MOD1 and hase used the same gears for 5 years now.

The new boxes will use MOD 1.25

We also have MOD 1.0 on our drive. We had to replace the gear on the motor though last month as it was getting worn after about 100ish fights. Mind you we dont grease them as its sticky, gets your hands dirty, and all the bits picked up from the wheels sticks to it and its hell to clean.

Our last gear on our arm is MOD 2.0 (EN-65) then a 2:1 chain drive. This gear has about 2,000Nm of torque on it during stall so this might be a little over the top for a 100Nm drive.

CHIP uses MOD 1.5 and MOD 2 on the two stage gearboxes.

                  Gear Definitions, as follows;

Tooth sizes and pitch (spacing) are generally expressed in two ways (metric+imp)

                  DP (Diametrical Pitch)
The number of teeth per inch of Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) - How many teeth per inch around the outside of the gear (large number=small teeth and small number=big teeth)

                  MOD (Module)
The Pitch Diameter (in mm) divided by the number of teeth. So a 60mm gear has 60 teeth at MOD 1, 30 teeth at MOD 2, 20 teeth at MOD 3 etc.

Hope this helps, cant advise on what size to use, cos we dont. (use chain drive)

Actualy, the calculation for a MOD gear is sleightly different.

Z*mod+(2*mod)= outher diameter. The 60 tooth mod 1 example will be 62mm outher diameter (60*1+(2*1), but as Roger says 60mm pitch diameter.( this is the contact point between the 2 gears if alligned perfectly)

                        I have a question.
For my featherweight, im going to use a lifter/grabber weapon. The beak will be driven by one LA. THe only problem is, both parts of the beak(upper& lower part) move in the upside directions.

Id like to use 2 gears to switch there directions. The only problem is, i cant make it very very precise, so it could be that the 2 gears would slip.

Would this be a problem? also, id like to use MOD 1.5 gears, would those work?

Mod 1.5 are way to heavy in a feather. And gears ,if they can slip, you have beaten the purpose. It has to be rather correct.

ok. Though, I only need 2 gears, but if they must be that correct, id better use something else.

Nils ...Could you post a diagram of your grab set up?

Then perhaps someone could offer a solution to your problem...

Levers/linkages rather than gears may be an alternative.
