    Re: A123 CELLS

There was an indication that a decision whether we could use A123s in heavies would be made at the FRA meeting at the end of July, can someone point me to where the decision is please?

      Re: A123 CELLS

It has been discussed at the last two FRA meetings, they are allowed in heavies although the rules on the website haven't been updated yet, hopfully by the end of the week they will be. You are still limited by the maximum running voltage as you are with any type of batteries.

        Re: A123 CELLS

We have been using A123s for some time now in THz and Sam and Grant are currently finishing off a couple of 4S5P A123 packs for Tiberius.

Packs are 13.2 V, 11 Ah and weigh under 2 kg each.
Compare with a 13 Ah Hawker Genesis - 4.9 kg, with effective capacity of only around 7 Ah at the rates we are discharging them.

          Re: A123 CELLS

Just seen this on the Aussie forum:
          http://www.gizmag.com/obama-battery-veh ... ent/12457/

It mentions that A123 will be one of several companies specifically set to benefit from the move, so while it might not have any immediate effect, it will be interesting to see if or how A123 lithium cells will develop, especially in regard to using them in our robots.

Cheap high-performance cells are what they are just now, so if they remain cheap yet boast a higher-still performance then woop woop

                    Re: A123 CELLS

No, those are 1.25mm pitch which is very small.
Battery connectors are usually 2.54mm (0.1) pitch. Or maybe 2mm.

Thanks John, looks like the correct size is on an adjacent page.

Has anyone tried one of these chargers?

                          Re: A123 CELLS

It's OK, as they shoudn't get that hot. Only use a very small amount, to avoid adding too much weight.
Alternatives (cold-setting rubber-like adhesives) are B&Q Rubber Glue, Bison Liquid Sole or Shoe Goo.

Just looking at the dewalt battery packs I've noticed that they have recently changed the packs and the cost is also significantly different.

I'm looking at 28V packs which on ebay I can get the DE9280 pack on ebay for £99.00

                            http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dewalt-DE9280-Li- ... 3357753a97

There is also the DC9280 pack which is £59.95

                            http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DEWALT-28V-BATTER ... 2303eb7890

Does anyone know what the difference between the two packs is?

As far as I can tell via the web they both use A123 Cells.... see the link I posted above for the cheaper pack ...so the difference is £39.05.
