we are currently carrying 2 24v battery packs (Sanyo NiCd 2400mAh) running 2 24v 800w motors at 24v. Does that mean if we put the packs in series and step down the voltage to 36v we could run 2 36v 750w motors at 36v without a problem?

Powering motors
If they are 24V boschs overvolted then 3 packs is your minimum, Ideally you should be running 3 packs already as with me you can just about get away with 2. The trouble is with overvolting the current draw also increases. If they are 36V nominal motors then it depends on typical current draw.

the batteries get a little warm currently but have had no real problems. I wasnt thinking of overvolting motors but of using motors rated for 750w at 36v with a typical current draw of about 26A. In terms of power from the batteries it seems like they should be less stressed.
