Hi I am a newbie to robotic combat and i was hoping somone would tell me all the essential components that are needed to create a robot

First of all. Like tanks and battleships we have the basic triad of power.

Manoeverability/Speed= drivetrain/control
Firepower= Weaponpower/armor defeating capabilitity.
Armor/survivability= Armor/redundancy
With a finit weight limit we have to balance these 3 according to the wish of the builder.

For control you have a Basic Radio Control system. 99% of the time RC stuff, like used for remote controlled cars/boats. Legal issue- you cant use dedicated RC plane 35MHz comercial setups for the robots.

Drive/power. Batteries and electrical Direct Current motors driving the wheels trough a reduction gearbox and controlled by Pulse Width Modulation speed controllers are the most used. You could try other means, but then I wish you good luck.

Weaponpower. A few mayor High power weapon groups. Axes, flippers and crushers.
Of course there are lower power versions of these, with Axes as the weakest of these, Flippers have the lifters as low power brother and the crushers have the grabbers/clampers weak version. Fast acting weapons can be directly powered by pneumatics, or very creatively , electrical. Slower weapons, if powerfull, mostly are hydraulical in nature and have proven devastating if done well.

Armor/redundancy. If the robot keeps on moving, in a controlable fashion, it can win the fight.

James, its in the Heavyweights topic. And Bens other tread about speedos was also in the heavyweight section, so I do think he ment to build a heavyweight robot.

But my list of parts works as well for any weightclass.

Ben, I can give you the examples of Team RCC.
Currently we have Obsidian ready to go, an Axe Robot that uses pneumatics to power an 8 kg axe.

Drive is a rather classic 2 Bosch 750 GPA motors driving kartwheels by chains and sprockets- 6-1 reduction ratio.
24V 11.1A NiMH pack (60 cells), Spectrum DX6 RX/TX setup and a Robotpower Sidewinder speedo completes the picture.

Weapon is a Custom build Maddox Ramrack and pinion setup, used @ 14bar. A 2kg CO2 bottle holds all the power for the weapon.

Armor, a bottom plate of 5mm 6082T6 aluminium and a 15mm-20mm plastic shell (HDPE) completes the Triad of Power in this machine.

If you want an 8 wheeled and motor driven rambot, I wont stop you.
