  • Car style steering setup? Any ideas???

Hello all, long time since Ive posted on a RWs related forum. Good to see the community is still going strong.

Anywho, want to get back into building. So me fancies me chances of building a featherweight. Was thinking of powering it with one big motor. A C5 motor, dont ask. But I need a steering setup. Anyone got any ideas on setup solutions? Good servo motors, etc

Also on the look out for new team mates ANYWHERE in the SOUTH EAST.

Best ask Trevor of Velocerippa fame. His featherweight is the only one I know of with car steering, and from having a peek inside it looks like hes got a very good system thought up. A C5 in a feather!?! but seriously, if youve got £25 to spare just get a gold motor which would do much better in a feather, or £20 is enough for a couple of drill motors (which come with the gearboxes).

Its possible to do much the same thing with 2 off N Channel Fets and 2 relays instead of the H bridge of Fets.

If you can find an H5 or H6 esc, then these have a servo controller option. You would then just need a small motor and gearbox, available from model shops e.g. the ones made by como drills.

Yeah i remember having a good look.
I think it was at series 6 qualifying. You had just had your fight and was looking not too pleased. Feel free to correct me if i got that wrong. Starting to become just distant memories.
It was always very noticable due to the car style steering.

If you cant find an H5 or H6, you could try one or two of these:

I managed to qualify for every Series that I entered ....... but attended Series 6 with Mario , Kos and Tough As Nails ...filming for the Dutch Robot Wars.
Perhaps it was series 5 at Elstree?

                    Yep.......very distant memories.

TAN was there for the Dutch Series II, meaning it was also the filming of Series 6. The Germans were there for their first and only series.

Owwwww, didnt expect so many posts, well thank you all.

Right well starting at the top has anyone got Trevor of Velocerippas E-mail address.

                        John mentioned H5/H6???

Thanks for the pix John, was a great help. Ill probably scale downwards from your example. And go for a lighter motor with a torque in the region of 32.5 g/cm at maximum efficiency. Thats it I can get it with a 50:1 g/box.

In answer to Ewans question, why C5s. Well Im not the greatest builder, OBVIOUSLY. Got big problems with too many BIG IDEAS. So for my first SUCCESSFUL build Im gonna keep it simple. I have C5s with gearboxes and mountings already. All I have to do is pop them in. No weapon, all I have to worry about is building a chassis and putting in the transmission.

Just want to keep it simple so I can start competing at last. Dont care it I do not win. Once Ive built one I can go from there.

Dan, jump on a train to Colchester on Saturday 29th or Sunday 30th October, only 45mins from Liverpool Street and come have a look at the machines taking part in the XFM Halloween Competition - youll learn more from looking at the real thing than from a forum anyday !

The H5/H6 are speed controllers that have a servo / steering function.

The motor controller is no longer available ......but the technical info is .....
