  • Featherweight Fuse

    Hello

Does anyone now, if a fuse at the featherweight class is required by the rules?

    Thank you for your answer.

Yes, a fuse is required for Featherweights if you are using LiPo batteries (and it is probably a good idea to fit one anyway even if you are not using LiPo batteries - I do with my LiFePO4 batteries).

Hi there. You only need a fuse for your battery, which should be fairly simple to calculate. Just figure out how much your machine is drawing at full power (eg. both sides of drive at full power, weapon active/activated if you have one), and have a fuse a little above that so the FW doesn't destroy your electronics in the event of stalling/shorting etc. It's good practice to place fuses before most key components (speed controllers, weapon systems), as fuses will always be cheaper and easier to replace. The reason a fuse before the LiPo is required is really for the safety of everyone involved: a damaged battery will always be more dangerous then a damaged motor.

        7.8 LiPo
Lithium Polymer batteries have specific limitations and extra precautions which must be adhered to.

        7.8.3 Fusing
A fuse rated below the maximum burst discharge of the battery MUST be fitted. The maximum burst
discharge current is calculated by multiplying the C rating by the capacity. E.g. 25C 2200mAh = 55 Amp

        No regulations for other chemistries.
