  • Rex's Robot Challenge build guide - ideal for beginners

There have been a few people recently on this forum saying that they are starting to build their own robots - which is great -but also arent sure where to start.Well, if it is any help, I have scanned Issues 1-37 (all those required to get a working robot built) of the Rexs Robot Challenge build guides from the Real Robots magazines to my PC.

These construction guides tell you how to design and build a 12kg featherweight robot with a fizzy bottle powered pneumatic flipper with most of the components being obtained second-hand for little or no cost.Although the robot in the magazines is driven by windscreen wiper motors, the principles behind it are essentially the same and could be adapted for drill motors or any other kind of motive power.

I am hoping to put a link to these files on this thread by storing it in my website document folder but it may take me several days before I can get it done.If you wish them just now, email me at lenny_1024@hotmail.com or post here and I will try to email you them. The total file size is 26.3.MB.Im not sure if this is too big to send through an email, but I can sure as hell try .If not, I will hopefully have the link up by Monday, if not sooner.

Many regards and happy bot building,
    Lenny

Thanks for the info Martyn but Im pleased to say that Ian McDonald has offered to host a webpage for it to save people having to download it. All I need to do now is send him the HTML coding and it should hopefully be up pretty soon.

      Cheers

Ok, I know its been a while since I first posted this but there were some problems in getting the files uploaded to the hosting server so the plan of having them on a webpage is delayed just now. So temporarily Ive uploaded them to Photobucket just so people will actually be able to access them even if the format is a little difficult when it comes to navigating them to follow them as a build guide.

The articles can be found here: http://photobucket.com/albums/c367/ayrshireroboticshttp://photobucket.com/albums/c367/ayrshirerobotics

Apologies for the wait and hopefully sometime soon theyll have an actual webpage for viewing

          Happy roboteering,
          Lenny

P.S. The photobucket account has a bandwidth thingy on it so if you go to the link and the picturs arent accessible then it probably means its exceeded its bandwidth (in which case itll only be a case of waiting until the bandwidth counter is reset)

Just a little update to say that the Rexs Challenge articles are now on a webpage as originally planned. It should hopefully make it easier to navigate them now.

            The web address is: http://www.rrc.dannysrobots.co.ukwww.rrc.dannysrobots.co.uk

Many thanks to Danny Gilbert for hosting these for free, its much appreciated

I believe Rex has discontinued the speedo a while back since the Real Robots magazine finished - unless you can find someone selling second hand youre out of luck there Im afriad.

Your best bet is the Electronize speed controllers (http://www.electronize.com/http://www.electronize.com/). The 15amp (code: FR15HX or FR15HVR microprocessor controllers should be ideal for most machines (they take direct input from a standard RC reciever). Please let me know what motors you intend to drive and at what voltage so that I can make a more accurate reccomendation.

Do you intend to enter combat events, or the http://www.ukroboticgames.comUK Robotic Games or something else? What kind of ideas for the machine have you got?

I hope I can be of help
