    Hi,

    A certain young man who spent the whole of yesterday in the pits at Gadget Show Live has definitely caught the fighting robot bug and has put competing next year with his own robot onto his bucket list.

    What he didn't realise at the time was that James was going to allow him to take Double Trouble home at the end of the day (minus all the loaned motors, wheels etc). So his first learning project is reinstating the drive system and this is where I missed a trick yesterday by not asking enough questions about the donated components.

    Does any body remember what was put on Double Trouble or alternative suggestions or recommended specifications? I think he needs to reinstate 2 x motor/gearbox/wheels, 2 x motor controller, a kill switch and the RC transmitter/receiver combo.

    I've got some 18v drill motors and tx85a speedos to hack.

      What it was using was a couple of cordless drill motors (I'm not sure on the voltage) with mounts that Robochallenge used to make commercially and a couple of electronize speed controllers and Spektrum radio gear. I can't remember what else there was in there, but pretty much all the parts are transferable with other similar parts that it won't matter too much what you go with.

      Easiest way to get t going might be to ask if there are any of those mounts that anyone has that they're looking to get rid of, so that you don't need to do much fabrication or anything, then it's a case of fitting some modified drills (below)

      and speed controllers, again it used Electronize, but the commonly used TZ85s (link below)

      Wheels are a difficult one at the moment, there doesn't seem to be any simple way of doing it and I can't remember what size it was using anyway. Radio equipment is a matter of choice really, as long as it is 2.4GHz it should work. The kill switch for it is the Deans Connector just above the robot wars sign on the back of the robot, I'm not sure how it's wired exactly so the wiring for the drive might be connected to that one too, or you could just have another one the same next to it for drive.

      It looks like you'll need a battery and charger too if everything is in that photo?

        In the end it wasn't using drill motors as they were struggling for power with the weight over the front of the robot. I believe a pair of 18v 775 motors, attached to "P60" Banebots gearboxes were actually used, which as we saw gave it loads of power. I was driving the little white and black robot called Tormenta in our competition. James is clearly a natural!

              Ranglebox (Owned by Ellis) do the 'Saturn' motor and gearbox combo which will be a perfect replacement for the motors that were used in Double Trouble

                Hi, I built and own a fw clusterbot called double trouble, people try and not call robots by the same name as someone else's for less confusion, it's a gentlemens agreement between roboteers :-)

                  I don't think such things were considered by my son when he named it. Given the minor rule infringement of being 50% overweight (still 17.9kg without motors, gearboxes, wheels and battery) then this Double Trouble will retire from active combat and live its life out as a minor celebrity amongst his friends (if he ever tells them what he got up to at the weekend) :-)

                          Just an alteration would be great :-) if the robot was dead and buried then no probs but I'm currently rebuilding it over the summer to compete in fw comps soon

                            Hi,
                            I just been informed from a friend that the circumstances surrounding this robot and it's name leaves me With no issues whatsoever with using this name.
                            Should we meet in combat or the same event all I ask is you to alter it slightly :-) my clusterbot needs 2 drivers so maybe you can help me out ;-)

                              Correct. 18V 775 motors with 16:1 "P60" gearboxes on 5 inch colson wheels. It was powered from 6S Lipo batteries. I would alternatively recommend a Saturn or 4 inch wheels.

                              My Thumper robot was the donating machine.

                              If we're talking about losing weight on the machine, those disc bearings were rather excessively heavy.

                              James is clearly a natural!
                              Fantastic driving considering the lack of prior experience. It would be nice to see him about the live circuit.
