  • Drive cutout?

    I'm getting some issues with my drive cutting out on HardWired, running on a charged/balanced 4s LiPo (5000mah, about 35C or something like that) with these speed controllers - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/High-Volta...item20cffabd44 and 12v B&Q drill motors. Not entirely sure what's causing it, but it only seems to happen when I go from forward to reverse quite quickly, don't know if it's the motors stalling or what, but I thought I'd ask on here, see if anyone knows what the culprit could be!

    Usually that kind of behaviour is an Amps Spike and the cutout in the speedo taking over to give itself a breather before continuing.

      it could be a duff esc, i have those in both my robots and i have only had issues like that with with the early version which didn't have a fan

      1 issue was same crud had got in the case and once i had opened it up and cleaned it out it worked fine and the other was a loose connection between a fet that was bolted to the heat sink

      also have you disconnected 1 of the BEC circuits

        I have done that, it's the red wire isn't it?

        I'll have a look, see if I can get in it - I've just had a quick look at them again and it appears that it only happens when I go from forward to reverse, maybe there's a brake function on these ones?
        Going to google them, see if I can find an operational manual or something...

        Turns out I can't find any, I didn't get any instructions with mine so this could get a tad difficult...

          yup the red 1

          also while you have it open you can disconnect the switch and solder across the connection

          it does say they have breaking but ive never really noticed it

            Ah, that's alright, already got that cut!
            I shall do that too when it's all taken apart, saves a bit of space and all that

            I see... it seems the only thing that might be causing these to be like they are, got a video of them, it only does it when I'm going forward to reverse so it might be that just being a bit too sensitive - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hlBh_s3b9Y

                Ah, that's just my radio gear - it's really sensitive on the right stick, I've sorted that now though - it's not doing it anymore I don't think...

                I don't suppose your escs came with any instructions at all? I can't find any for them on google

                  no i didn't get any instructions with mine

                  the odd thing is i have 1 of those esc running 2 drill motors with no prob, the only thing i can think to check now it to put it full throttle forward and jiggle the esc that should show if a wire is loose and maybe try the other esc BEC

                    Yup, that's a braking function alright.
                    Specifically for car ESCs, it's so you can have the option of braking to slow the car down, rather than just having to resort to reverse. Bringing the stick back to neutral before it changes direction is quite a common action for cars (and thinking about it, it's the same for the ESC controlling my brushless motor in Drumroll)
                    You'll also notice, by the pitch of the motor sound, you're only getting about 50% throttle when in reverse.

                    For robots, it's less than ideal (and by less than ideal, I mean a pain in the derriere). There may be an option to disable it, but without instructions, it's hard to know for sure.

                      I've tried both of those, still no changes
                      I can't think what it'd be bar that brake option, but I don't know how to get rid of that... I've emailed the seller on eBay, see if they've got any instructions or anything - maybe that might shed a bit of light on matters...

                      Ah, thanks there too Jamie - it'd make sense for it being like that! And I am too, I can get on with the slower throttle in reverse but that brake is crippling to say the least! D: Just waiting for that return email from the ebay seller to figure things out!

                        there must be a few versions of the same style of esc as mine don't seem to have the breaking or 50% in revers

                          I think there will be, they don't seem to be uniform across all the listings so I may have fallen a tad unlucky with the ones I've bought...
                          Still, I can cross my fingers and hope it's merely a programming difference! Failing that, I'll get some of those TZ85As at a later date and hack them myself or something and repurpose these ones into that wood bot I'm building, with car style steering.

                            Sorry for the double post, but does anyone know if it's possible to manually remove a brake function, through re-soldering the insides of an ESC? I'm not entirely hopeful that'd work, but it's worth a shot I suppose...

                              generally brake in things like a TZ85 would be a software function
