  • Making my own wheels

So I decided I wanted to make my own wheels

Previously I have bought robo challenge wheels to screw onto the end of drills

Moving to Gimsons the threaded section leaves alot of plain 12mm shaft

So I decided to make wheels that utilise this part of the shaft

I bought some banebots orange 100mm wheels

I'd previously obtained some linear bearing shaft supports to try off ebay
    e.g. SHF12 12mm Linear Bearing Shaft Support (12mm ID x 24mm OD x 12mm L) Hi-Q

      Re: Making my own wheels

I drilled out the wheel with a 12mm drill. I have a drill press now that makes it alot more accurate than a hand drill
I used a router to make the face flat on the wheel to mount the support
I then mounted the support to the wheel with 5mm bolts

Relieved the area around the nut, again with the router, so the nut (self locking) would sit flat

Finally this give a package looking a bit like

Havent yet decided what to do about the additional bearing support (i.e. is is needed) and the spare shaft length

A very nice assembly there, effective yet still simple enough for most people to try.

I personally don't think you need to worry too much about an extra bearing support, although I don't imagine there would be anything wrong with adding one. Your wheel currently sits quite close to the gearbox, similar to where it would be on a standard drill motor. The extra bearing supports were recommended because the threaded part of the output shaft, to which a wheel is normally screwed on, is much further out than usual and the shaft could have been more prone to bending, but you've minimised this issue with your design.

Thanks, the tools I have dictate my design ambition

My favourite tool is an engineers vice. Just can't believe I didnt buy one sooner. The amount of skin I lost before I bought it is not worth thinking about.
The drill press is a Christmas present and given the number of holes I find I drill this is going to make life alot easier.
