Bonding polycarbonate

Evening all,

I was just wondering what experiences people have had when bonding polycarbonate? Ive ordered polyweld (thick solution). It's to bond the leading edges of the two wedge plates on an inventible bot together so they are effectively one piece. This is then screwed onto the frame.

Things I have seen.

Basic. Araldite, woodscrews, Ali angle and bolts.

Advanced, chloroform, type specific adhesives, heatformed/welded

The stuff I've got chemically welds the two panels together apparently so I'll drive it full speed into a wall to see how it holds up. Im looking to use two Ti strips to act as wear plates and a little more resilience to the leading edge. They'll have to be bonded on too

Wow, that was hijacked lol.

Anyway. Im not having much luck sourcing titanium to use for the leading edges on the wedge sections of my bot. I was wondering what other materials could be used? The thickness would be around 0.5mm to 0.8mm and would be bonded to the polycarbonate panels?

I've got a sheet of 2mm stainless steel (though I reckon it's closer to 1.5mm thick) that I have no use for. Not sure of its dimensions off-hand (it's got similar proportions to a sheet of A4 paper, but bigger) so it might fall short of your requirements, but if you don't mind waiting till the weekend I can find out and let you know. If it's not too small, you can have it for the cost of postage.

i have some 2-2.5mm ish ali. the longest ti i have is 335mm

cheers guys but what i need is two sheets of 444mm x 20-50mm x 0.6-0.8mm Ti. i'm thinking that stainless would be the next best thing as it would have to withstand (or bounce back from) the bot landing on that corner. i tried 5mm ali and that bent up with the weight landing on its corner.

I'm just not sure if stainless is up to the job, especially that thin? i know Ti wouldn't deform.

Ahh, I thought you were using Ti mainly for its toughness but if you're factoring in elasticity, then stainless will probably be more susceptible to bending so may not be useful. If you can't get hold of any suitable Ti, I'd suggest going for 3mm+ of steel and grinding an edge on it.

I've been trying to source the Ti from various companies but only had one reply. There doesn't seem to be a shop for it like there is for HDPE!

found some but it was MEGA expensive and i would then need to get it cut to size. Ideally, what id like is to find someone who could supply the pieces pre cut
