  • Featherweights in scotland

    Hi All,

    I'm looking to build a featherweight robot to get back into the fun of robot building. I last build robots 10 years ago i'm now 25 and its like starting all over again.....

    What I was wondering was... are there any featherweight bots in the scotland area (thats where i'm from)? It would be great to have car park fights etc with?

    Thanks
    Billy

    Re: Featherweights in scotland

    Welcome back to the club. There are a few feather weights in scotland. My own being some of them. Where in scotland are you based? the problem with featherweights these days is that they are so powerful, car park style fights are too dangerous. To put it in perspective, the spinners in the feather weight class now can store the same level of kinetic energy that hypnodisc first had!

        There was one last weekend (19th) in Edinburgh but will probably be next year before there is another one up here. I'm in West Dunbartonshire so quite close compared to most, could always attempt some car park fights if you're bots have no weapons to get out of control I guess. Finding a piece of tarmac that doesn't have huge craters in it will be the hard part though

            Haha I suppose not, but it'll need to be pretty flat other than that, my bot sometimes gets stuck when the ground is flat

                Re: Featherweights in scotland

                I came back into the sport after about 10 years only to find windscreen wiper motors and SLA's are old skool!

                What do you mean I can't make a robot out of MDF, pop rivets and angle Ali!!

                Anyway, there's loads of info on the forum if you have a good search around. The build diaries are a good place to look.

                I also found watching videos of other people's matches was handy;

                Check out Jamie's YouTube channel (he's also Scottish!) for loads of great FW fights. Give's you a good idea of the scope for FW robots.

                  Just watched that video wow. Makes hypnodisc look like an antique lol.

                  Well I guess mdf is out the window. What about 3mm aluminium plate for a base and I see there is new stuff hdpe? That any good for brackets, mounts and sides etc?
