would adding some weight around the wheels push the wheels into the ground more and give more traction or just slow you down?

Re: tips for getting more traction?
If you can spare the weight some mass right above the wheels would be perfect, another thing to look out for is that your tread is suitable (tyre tread works well, also blue wheels are okay, but can be made better with Jamies method) or just making sure your tyres are clean, and not worn down (having crud stuck in your tread doesnt help, Valliants tyres improved leaps and bounds after i cleaned them, but its an antweight so im guessing it will be less noticable to scale) take a leaf out of f1's book: having offroad style treads instead of slick ones in the wet to provide more grip
