Thats alright the controller I was planning to use is rated at 60A continous 120 Peak. I'm trying to avoid stalling it but its an axe so might come up against some resistance. Pulse are only going be for about 2 seconds is that likely to do much damage to the motor?

Re damage it is the sudden stop, that would do the damage, the motor is not designed to take those forces for too long. I would agree with Alan, relays coupled together to make a reversing contractor and a couple of micro switches would soften the blow for the motor on the axe arm movement limits. also they would be a little cheaper £12 for the lot!!
