  • wheels and motors help needed!

today i mounted my rear wheels but when i went to test it, i herd the motors turning but the wheels were not moving.

it could be a few things:
    batteries not fully charged
motors cant handle the weight (9KG at the moment)
friction caused by the front on the ground (i am mounting front wheels, i wanted to test the rear ones though)

the motors are 12V so they should be able to handle it, the front wheels are being mounted next weekend and the batteries will be fully charged.

any thing else i can do?

i presume your using drill motors, and the problem suggests you have locked the gear box with grub screws

if you are using drills, when you took them apart there would have been loads of little ball bearing falling everywhere down the holes they came from you need to put a grub screw to do the same job as the ball bearings

    hope this helps

As you and the previous poster said; try using fully charged batteries and measure the correct voltage actually going to the motor.
Also test them without any load (robot upside down wheel spinning freely) to rule out if they cant handle the weight, altho the should.

None of it will matter unless you have modified the gearbox using the grubscrew technique, assuming it's drill motors.

sounds like you havnt hacked your drill motor- if thats what your using, otherwise your motor will spin but not transfer any drive to the output shaft.......

A little more information is required about your setup before any sensible advice can be given.

What motors are you using (drills or something else)?
              What batteries?
              What radio gear?
              What speed controllers?

Working out problems with robots should be done by isolating each part of the system, checking it out as far as possible and eliminating it from the overall problem.

I'd also advise that the comment you made anyone else? without any further information about what you had and hadn't checked from the post that Alex made comes across as rather rude. One of the tricky things about communicating on the net is making sure that you come across in the correct way when asking for advice.

What batteries? the batteries from the drills atm
What radio gear? none atm, did a dry run with the drill push switch to check the motors
What speed controllers? none atm, look above

answered above. i see what your saying, communication via web is hard and im sorry if i came across as rude.

i did a test with the wheels with no weight on them and they worked fine. i am adding front wheels next weekend to reduce friction, and charge the batteries fully then ill try again

I did a search of your posts.

ok, i have got some Robo Challenge €˜Blue wheels€™, x2 12v argo drill motors and 2 caster style wheels which are not powered

Have you locked the gearboxes as suggested in the second post of this thread?

Re: wheels and motors help needed!

The motors are designed to work with our mounts. Our mounts lock the ball bearing in position so it sends the power to the output shaft. Do you still have all of the bearings in the motors and how have you mounted them?

Re: wheels and motors help needed!

the motor are just mounted with 2 pieces of polycarb cut out too fit over it and too keep it in place

Re: wheels and motors help needed!

                          AND IS THE GEARBOX LOCKED?

                          http://www.wa4dsy.net/robot/drillmaster/index.html

I'd not recommend the O ring approach.

forgive my lack of knowledge but what do you mean by locked?

As soon as any load like the your robot is placed on the wheels the gearbox will slip unless you put something to stop it.

This can be done with an O ring (still provides torque limiting) or some grub screws which are better because you can get all the torque the motor can give.

The multiple sets of instructions will tell you how to do it.
