I have some 14Vdc 30A relays (SPDT Type) are these OK for the relay mod. If not which ones are people using?

Also do the external relays just replace the internal ones, ie the wire just need to go from the board where the internal relays were to the pins on the external relays (If that makes any sense?).

Ed - The Electronize Mod is on http://www.featherweights.orghttp://www.featherweights.org in the Tech Section mate. Wirten by Dom R who has done the mod.

Yeah I know ive downloaded it, still not quite clear on the points noted above though.

I think I know what he means, fine on the external relays but where is the picture of the inside of the electronize? Do you throw the old ones out? Looks a good idea though even if it just shifts the heat around a bit.

The guide has written with the pre modded speed controllers now available in mind.

From what I understand this mod can be done with standard controllers but I have never done it myself, I belive Ian lockhart from the Ewe2\Cutlelt team did a modification before this fix became available so maybe he can shed some light on this. It also used to be possible to send controllers without the mod back to electronise to have controllers modified for external relays as i have had this done but be warned it can take a while.

Your relays sound suitable. Most people use automotive relays available from technobots maplins and many other retailers.

            Hello

I have some 10amp electrolises and they come with DPDT relays. I want to replace these relays with 2 SPDT relays. How would i go about doing this? I just dont know which pin on the DPDT would corrospond to which pin on the SPDT.

The DPDT has 8 Pins and the SPDT has 5pins. Can anyone help?

            Regards
            Ian

Im guessing a bit here but I guess the 8 pins on the DPDT are arranged with two on one end and six on the other:
              [: :::]

The two on their own are the coil contacts. Each of the SPDT will also have two coil contacts. You need to identify which they are and connect them to where the DPDT coil was. They should be connected in parallel. This is probably best done by soldering wires to the original PCB then either soldering to the SPDT or buying the correct connector(s) and using them (Technobots sell some nice crimp connectors).
The centre pair of the six other connectors are the common or change over (CO). The SPDT will also each have a CO.
Of the four contacts now left, the two closest to the coil contacts are the normally closed (NC), and the last two on the end are the normally open (NO). They are arranged so that the three on one side will go to one SPDT and the other three will go to the other.
If you get stuck there should be a little circuit diagram on the case somewhere showing which connectors are which like this:

              ` ` `.~~~. ` coil
              ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` `
              NO.__ ` ` __.NC
              ` ` ` ` `/ ` ` `
              ` ` ` ` / ` ` `
              ` ` ` `| ` ` ` `
              ` ` ` `| ` ` ` `
              ` ` ` `* ` ` ` `
              ` ` ` CO ` ` ` `

If this isnt clear I could try to draw a full circuit diagram.

How does an Electronize speedo handle 2 12v nominal batteries in series? These may end up being a few volts over the 24v maximum. I use 18v nicads and often get close to 20v.

Do people have problems there with using 2 12v battery packs in series?

                  Thanks

No one i know has this problem.
I think the speedo is designed to handle a voltage a tiny bit over their rated volt rates.

Dont try this at home, but Rexs Challenge (RRC) 24v speed controllers can handle 32v

Im sure they took into account that fully charged batteries will give out a higher voltage at the start. Many roboteers use those speed controllers using 24vs worth of Nicads and SLAs, and all seems fine.

I use 25.2v NiCads and they work fine with electronizes

I have just noticed one thing
I was looking at the relay that came with my 10amp electrolise and it has a 6v coil. My replacement relays from technobots have 12v coils. Will these work together?
