  • Rules and Regs for Featherweights

    Hi all,

Can someone point me in the right direction for finding the rules and regs for the featherweight class?

    I'm looking for:

    1.) maximum weight
    2.) minimum weight
    3.) maximum size (dimensions)
4.) Other than a removable link and power on LED, what other safety must haves should I be aware of?
    5.) Anything not allowed?

I appreciate all answers and I hope to meet some of you at the end of September in Yeovilton.

    Martin

Re: Rules and Regs for Featherweights

As Gary has said, most stuff is in the rules. However they're a bit out-of-date in some cases (I think that was getting rectified at a recent meeting) so here's a quick list:

      1) Max weight for a featherweight is 13.6kg inc consumables. This means if you use CO2 in a pneumatic flipper, your robot has to weigh 13.6kg when the gas bottle is filled up.

      2) There's no minimum weight enforcement really. Technically the max weight limit of the next class down (at least in active weight classes here) is the beetleweight/kilobot class which is 1.362kg, although there haven't actually been any battles in this weight class yet. So I guess you could say the minimum fw limit is 1.362kg, but you won't be denied a battle at a fw event if your robot weighs less than that

      3) There's no concrete size limit as far as I know, although figures around the 2m mark generally surface with regards to this question. If you build it so that it's too big for the pit, then no problem. But bear in mind that the bigger the robot, the more area you have to cover in armour. Therefore you face a compromise between thickness and weight. As a guide most robots are around the 300mm to 400mm squared mark.

      4) Locking pin/bar to lock your weapon in place (whether an axe arm or a flipper etc) so that should it accidentally fire, its movement is restricted thus reducing the chances of causing an injury to someone should they be standing close by at the time. Also worth a mention is sharp edge protection to stop people slicing themselves on any sharp edges.

      5) Yup, usually all the weapons people suggest when you mention that you're building a robot like from Robot Wars (emf, firearms, liquid-based objects etc). There is a more definitive list in the rules in the above link.

Hope that helps a bit; I'll be at the event in Yeovilton so I'll make sure to say hi
