Speed controllers

My Sabertooth controller is knackered, so I need a replacement, but dont really have the money for another one.
Can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative(s)?
Robot specs: Running on 14.4v 3300mAh NiMH, got a Spektrum now, so running on that reciever, so got failsafe and that.
The replacement needs to be quite small, really nothing more than 6cm x 6cm.
Anyone help?

Dave how did you damage the previous controller?

Was it a mechanical issue - nuts i dropped a hammer on it

Or an electrical one - not the dam blue smoke!

Also what are you running on 14.4v? A 7.2V drill motor is very different to a 24v one running on the same voltage.

I dont know whats wrong with it, but in a circuit that used to work fine, now when I plug the link in, there are no lights and the wires connected to the battery burn up instantly. This has happened in 4 different circuits, with batteries ranging from 18v to 7.4v, even on the simplist circuit. Ive no idea whats happened to it, but my last robot went up in smoke and its done the same thing each time since then.

Dave, sounds like exactly the same thing that happened to my controller and I was running it close to its limits.

I was running hornets 2 18V drill motors on 24V pushing the controller to its limits. I blew through two of the controllers before getting a refund (one original, one replacement).

Depending on when you purchased the controller and from where I believe you may be able to get a replacement or refund.

It seems the sabretooth does not like to be run on overvolted motors.

Its from technobots but its pretty old now, got it about a year ago, and I dont have a clue where the recipt could be.
Gary, would you suggest something else rather than buying a replacement Sabretooth then? Cos Im currently unemployed and running out of cash to throw at it.

No bother mate. I would try technobots again but if you dont want then fair enough.

I would recommend the electronize 15A microprocessor controlled speedos which can be bought from technobots.

Only controllers I have never had a problem with hornet with and controllers which I am seriously considering going back to. They survived a completely jammed wheel on hornet in its first outing and didnt blow. I was very surprised!

You can also get them in a DIY format if you have some soldering kit, have some basic soldering skills and a bit of time on your hands.

Sorry to bump and old thread but it saves making a new one.

I've got a few questions on speed controllers. Firstly, Some of you may of noticed that Satanix was not working well at the Tag Team Champs, yet worked fine on the bench. From what I can gather its a current limiting issue, but it seems strange to be cutting in at even low speeds. My old controller, the Rick Maas special, didn't have this problem (until its run in with Hornet). I am wondering if it requires fan cooling, because the Rick Maas special does have fan cooling, my current one doesn't. I'm using Speed 900's on 18v ATM.

Also, I had considered changing to victors, but I cannot dimensions for them. Can anyone help ? Weight would be helpful too.
