    hi

i have been looking for motors for da bomb and have been getting a little stuck

    i have 3 choices

    1. http://www.xbotz.com/motors.htmhttp://www.xbotz.com/motors.htm the purple heat, it looks good and cheap.
have any of u guys used it?

    2. gold motors, they look reliable and cool but expensive (for a 12 year old)

    3. other, if u guys know of a better motor it would be great! i dont really wont to go above £25-£30 though

Drill motors...9.99 9.6v drills from Argos should be enough to get things moving, you can spend a bit more for better ones or overvolt them for more power, but on a budget you cant really do better than them...motor and gearbox in one with lots of people doing mounts for them and wheels etc.

    Hope that helps

Okay, heres my opinion (If needed!)
The Puple Heat motors look ok, but are a bit small, no ive never used them, but i got the size from a near-by ruler!
Can we have a link or picture of these Gold Motors?
Drill motors might be a good choice, go down to your local Wilkinson, and they do some quite cheap drills there, get 2, then, take it all apart, get an adult to help with getting the end bit off of the motor (It should come off just by pulling or twisting, but its so hard, im 12 aswell, and i did Ju-Jitsu for 4 years so im pretty strong, but i still cant do it!)
They would be a good choice of motor, fast and reliable (Sort of).
We used these motors in Hunter design 1, but then it broke itself, so now we use them in Chicken Supreame.
      Its really your choice.
      Hope this helps

        Jack,

        1) Never used the purple ones

        2) I have used gold motors before and they are great little motors for a ramming machine. Only problem is that you require a gearbox, chain and sprocket arrangement etc which I was able to do in my pre-lathe days but it was a right pain.

        3) I recommend buying some cheap cordless drills (around the 12V mark) and taking them apart. You can then screw a wheel on sold by robochallenge (either grant or james cooper) along with one of their drill mounts and you have a very nice reliable drive solution that will probably cost you around the 30 pound mark per side (depending on how much you spend on drills).

You can see these here fully assembled,

And just the motors and gearboxes on their own,

I have used golds for the last 5 years, only had one failure other than being smashed by little hitter, ive lost 2 that way now. They are really good motors, but like gary says they need gearing. It has taken about 4 years mucking about with chains to get them reliable, but it is worth it when you get it perfect.

It may well be worth it but drill motors are so much easier. Once I changed all the gears in mine to metal the only problems I had were due to them being exposed outside the machine.

Go for drills for a first go at a robot then look to other motors when you have been to events and seen how others do things.

              ok guys

didnt want to start a new thread just for this question so im posting it here:

my robot is pretty much done, just need a new speedo
but there is still a key element missing, i need a motor to power the electric lifter...any ideas, im very new to this weight class and not sure where to look

              cheers

Ive used the New style 14.4v Dewalt motors on 19.8v and they handled it, while only getting mildly hot. Biggest issue I had was the faceplate coming off the motors, they are like the Bosch 750s and need the face welded to the motor can.

Are makita dril motors fine for feathers, as we use the drills in work and they seem to be strong enough for the job.

Bosch 35 if your having an active weapon. Drill motors for a pusher. Gold motors are good but effort to gear down, Xbotz motors- i wouldnt deal with xbotz if they were giving the motors away.

yeah if you want a robot thats going to be any good, dont touch xbotz with a bargepole.
