  • Feather weight low pressure flipper

    hi,
Im soon going to start building a fw robot which will hopefully be quite good when its finished but i would really like to have a flipper on it, but ive never done anything envolving pnumatics before(is that spelt right?)

anyway is it hard to do?
does any one have a list of parts that i would need aswell as a pnumatics system diagram at all?
Ive got a bit of a idea of what to do but im not 100% sure.

    Hi Calum,

I have 2 low pressure feathers- Shockwave & Tidal Wave 2.

As a warning though, pneumatics can be dangerous- Shockwave may not be the most powerful flipper around but it still hurts if it hits you (trust me i know).

However if done safely and correctly they can be very effective (Shockwave has managed to flip 2 featherweights out of the Robots Live! arena)

    For shockwaves system we use
    600g CO2 bottle
    Regulator
    Low pressure relief valve
    dump valve
    3/2, 12v soleniod valve
40mm bore 60mm stroke ram with spring return.

We have found that this makes a good flipper with plenty of flips (I have never run out of gas in a fight)

    Hope this helps

    Will

Is it a good idea to attache the regulator to the bottle? This does away with the 1000psi dump valve but does it reult in the regulator freezing?

Also do bottles come with a standard fire extinguisher thread or does it need a filling station?

Good places for rams, valves etc- airlines pneumatics- they sponsored us with several parts for shockwave (http://www.airlines-pneumatics.com/http://www.airlines-pneumatics.com/)

Regulator- Email Trevor Wright (Mighty Mouse, Velocirippa etc.) He makes the ones that we use

CO2 bottle- email Jonno- we got ours from him.

The regulators that Trevor makes attach directly to the bottle and it does freeze occasionally- I run them in both Shockwave & Tidal Wave 2 with no problems at all.

The thread on the bottle is the same as a standard fire extingusher so no filling station is needed.

what is the difference between a single acting and a double acting pnumatic cylinder?

Single acting only uses gas for extending - they usually have a spring that pulls them back, while double acting ones use gas for both extending and retracting. ffffff>And that is the absolute limit of my pneumatics knowledge, so Im probably wrong...
