  • New design, your thoughts?

After much thought I have decided to bin the majority of the chassis of hornet and have been playing about with a few new ideas. I have a pic on my profile of the one I am currently edging towards (It is very basic but gives a good representation of it).

What I want to know is any problems that you can foresee and any improvements you could make?

Just so you are aware spec wise, the same 2kg disc from hornet with a mag spinning it to around 4000rpm (the gyro forces will make turning very interesting). 18v drill motors overvolted to 24v for drive. Armour etc will be worked out once I have settled on a design.

Well the exposed wheels are one problem ...
The design reminds me of an Australian Robot called Vertical Limits.

A have do a similar spin disc yesturday in a drawing and i hope for to get it watercut somday. It have a ballbearing in the center for a friction coupling and it will not stall the motor on impakt.

Not having made any spinners Im not sure about how accurate or true what Im about to say is, so correct me if Im wrong on any of it

Would having the wheels at the back with such a large gyroscopic force at the front not make turning very difficult? I remember reading some build info for BlacknBlue (vertical feather spinner) that had severe problems turning due to the disc forces (their wheels were at the back also)

Infact, just found the link to it:

That apart, its a nice design

Youll want a wider and shorter wheelbase. S3 had a good idea, as well as Pulveriser.

yep, same comments really. Idealy you will want the drive wheels perfectly inline with the centre of the disc and as wide as possible. That disc being used vertically off a mag will be very impressive to say the least

Or what you could do is replace the mag with a drill motor, thereby solving two problems:

              1. You wont have to worry about anywhere near as large a gyroscopic force, making steering much easier;
              2. We wont have to worry about our machines getting smashed to bits by a vertical mag-powered spinner

Ok just redesigning at the moment (thanks for the advice).

I am now looking at a 60cm wheelbase with the centres of the wheels and disc being 20cm apart from one another.

Jamie I wouldnt worry too much, remember I am all the way up here in sunny scotland and the clan can only spare me a few times a year (if I am lucky) to travel to englandshire

                    much better
Probably worth adding a nice shallow wedge on the back incase the disc stops working though as your drive should be quite good.

Im still worrying, Im a 20 minute bus journey away from a mag-powered vertical spinner - thats close enough!
Nice redesign though - those 18v motors you mentioned, wouldnt be a low-price Woolworths special there perhaps?

                          New design, your thoughts?

Woolworths (at least my branch in Sussex) is currently selling 18 volt drills with battery and charger for £10. Hard to beat.

I suppose the only thing you might want to avoid are vertical crushers like Razzler who can get at the axle, or pincers that can get a grip on the disc...other than that, its pretty awesome

Razzler - wasnt that the 150g modded antweight Razer? Doubt thatll be able to crush drill motors
