Would a drill motor (of good quality ie. dewalt) be any good for using as a spinner motor, and what about a direct fitting into the motor chuck, ie, blade welded to the axle, and fitted into the chuck.

    any thoughts

    dont do that,
every new builder of a certain age that comes into this sport do something similar, and no matter how many times people tell them not to, they all do.

the result? broken motor/gearbox, and wasted event as you break in the first fight.

This happend 12 months ago with some new builders, 2 years ago with others, and will no doubt continue. I hope you are the type to listen to out advice, which is...

do not weld spinners direct to shafts, but drill motors will work fine if used to power the spinner using belt or friction drive for example.

      Hi
      Look at Kishar on http://www.teamdragon.org.ukwww.teamdragon.org.uk
kishar uses 2 HTI motors (these are drill motors with out the gear box) to run its disc via chain drive. Theres a vid at the bottom of the page of the disc running.

Remember that with a spinner, half the energy that the disc contains is sent back through the chassis during a hit.

Mount the disc axle between two bearings which are solidly mounted the chassis then like James says, use a belt drive. You could also use a chain drive, each has their advantages and disadvantages.

its kool, im planning on using a flipper, but just thought maybe a spinner on the back, so drill motors are fine, as long as they are not connect direct to the drill chuck.

          thanks

Oh dear, its the I know, lets weld the disc directly to the motor story again
Does the name Newton mean anything at all? You know, the dead guy and his laws of motion.
Think about the one that goes on about action and reaction being equal!

Someone, PLEASE point him in the right direction before I post something I may later come to regret!
Sorry to sound hard, but Im just not in the mood to write yet another disertation on the finer points of how to safely mount rotating mass!

how to safely mount rotating mass?

put it in a box and leave it at home
much safer for all of us.

there was a guideline that said spinner shafts should be at least 10% of the flywheel diameter. i think that will do as a best practice on that issue.

if you read my reply, i did say that i was using a flipper but just wondering......newtons law, every action has a greater or equal re-action............

What the? William you seem to have misunderstood greatly there.

Geoff was basically trying to say yes, you are OK if you dont mount directly on the motor.

                    close

every action has an EQUAL and OPPOSITE reaction.
