I think that worked.

For roof I have 2mm aluminium and 2mm polycarbonate (I have some 10mm but that stuff is heavy). The 2mm poly was intended for ants, and would be too weak for combat and better suited for testing. I'll make a template so I can make and aluminium one and spares.

I think I'll try the poly first, not worked with it yet. Be a learning experience.

Need to work out the fixings to hold it together.

Drilling Polycarbonate is remarkably easy in my experience when I built my first Antweight arena and when I drilled the motor support holes for Kaizen. https://www.simplyplastics.com/guide...rbonate-sheet/ (this should help).

Yep my pillar drill cuts through incredibly easily. Sawing it was more challenging, seems I have the wrong blades as easier cutting on forward stroke, back snags, but I adjusted my technique and got the job done.

Bought some aluminium angle from B&Q it was cheaper than eBay, Amazon, Screwfix or any direct metal supplier I could find. Decent selection too.

Using this aluminium to make the fixings to hold the polycarbonate inside the body. Picture later. I will run out of nuts and bolts though need more M2.5 so not going to finish this weekend due to the bank holiday deliveries

Here are the picture from today's work.

I bought this polycarbonate as A4 sheets, drilling was easy as I mentioned in the last post. Cutting more challenging. I used my Dremel to smooth it off after. The angle I cut in strips and drilled for 2.5mm then I used these as templates (hence the markings) to locate where to drill the body. I have made it so the roof fits inside the body so it gets some protection. Poly is good for impacts but at 2mm not what I want exposed.

The rig you see above was to allow me to bend over the end to provide a shield behind the weapon. I have a Dremel gas tool that I used as a heat gun, the result is quite pleasing. I moved the gun back and forth about 4-cm from the edge I wanted to bend. Later moving further back to keep it at temperature once I started to bend it, apply gentle force. It bent at a nice tight angle and only one spot discoloured or rather small bubbles formed where is suspect it got a bit too warm.

Without the screws I can't fully fix it in place. But here is it half in.

The electronics you see is a "powered" indicator. I found this on eBay it's for cars so handles 12v easy.

Ready to rumble!

To fix the shell to the floor I cut some right angle aluminium, glued (as no welder) on nuts to inside.
It's still really packed inside. I cut a couple of cables down, but I think I need to do more in tidying the cables.

But it runs!

Still to do:

Wire up the powered on light
Shorten cables
Make a mount and assemble the high speed weapon

But it could happily compete as it stands.

As I live in Scotland, my events will be restricted. I am too late for Manchester, I am assuming so am entering Robots Live Grantham and Stevenage, also a Featherweight I have a concept and design for called Alligrator. Not yet applied for Extreme Robots Gloucester and Kinematics Marlow if it is the EU event.

Most events are Featherweight and the Beetle is a side event I assume. Any other events you'd recommend?

Applications stay open as I understand it rather than a defined cutoff period before the event (though for safety's sake, I'd recommend signing up at a minimum of 3 weeks before the event). I was able to signup for EXR Glocuester 2017 at about that time and still received the EO e-mail about it so I wouldn't say that you were too late for RL Grantham or Stevenage.

Not yet applied for [...] Kinematics Marlow if it is the EU event. Most events are Featherweight and the Beetle is a side event I assume. Any other events you'd recommend?

June is when the applications open for the EU championship so I would keep an eye out for that (something I fully intend to apply for). UWE occasionally hold Beetle Brawl events so there is that as well. Beetleweight events do tend to be side events - they were at RL Grantham 2017 as I recall and RL Burgess Hill runs one as well.

Standard practice - you typically don't hear from them until about 2 or 3 weeks before the event itself, I wouldn't fret too much just yet

I had a really good evening.

Finished the weapon motor and very pleased with the result. Not so simple as I had I template so it was a careful process to cut and file the profile down.

Swapped out the old motor and now it is a monster!

No deliberate reference, perhaps subconscious.
Just thought about something boring into an object, like a weevil beetle doing lots of damage and then came up with the Evel Knievel play on words. Seemed appropriate.

No - but if it ever tried to jump the grand canyon it's wearing a flared white jump suit and cape!
