I've said it time and again, but maybe not to Adam; Axes need something under their opponent to deliver the full force through the opponent. Otherwise it wastes a lot of energy making the robot jump.
What would happen if the shaft of an axe were slightly flexible? Surely, it would store a little energy on the downward path to be released on impact, but also provide some shock absorption? You'd have to work out how much flex would be efficient: too much and the weapon loses power of course.
