  • Massacre - FW

Because Ellis made me promise to start a build diary and i fear the wrath of Tormenta 2 :P
Hopefully the name isn't taken, had a quick (very quick) look and i think its free, ready to be corrected though. Anyway, the plan with this robot is to have a nice, compact robot to take to the champs that is well made and doesn't make me look like a right dribbler. At present moment i am going for an overhead bar style spinner, tad ambitious, but it can only go wrong. Going to concentrate on getting the drive and that going first and see how big a bar i can fit in that weight. wheel wise i will be using 40mm wide shore 40 73mm banebots, still dithering around gearbox wise. The bulkheads and suports will be 12mm T6 alu.
meh, its probably an insanely bad idea, but it will give me something to do. I'll post some pictures of the plans and designs when i can, fairly generic looking but might have a bit of power.

(oh, and cheers to the people who helped me with the planning of this, namely Pedro McHarg who very nicely put up with me badgering him )

It will be interesting to see an overhead bar spinner in the UK. I don't think there is one running at the moment. The Americans love them for some reason but I am not entirely sure why. You might take a few people by surprise with a new machine like that. I hope it goes well for you :-) yay for spinners!

Not a build diary until you add pictures!

Look forward to seeing an Overhead being built.

Oh i could post up pictures of bits so far, they would just be really boring, as half the bits have yet to be ordered or haven't come yet. Don't worry, you probably will be photoraped at a later date :P

still looking for Bar material, not sure wheather to go down the hardox route or maybes go for ti.
Also need to think about right angled gearboxes to fit the bushless.

          design

its just to get a rough feel for where things are going to be and how small i can make it, the bar (nicknamed the fuBAR mk1) will almost certanaly change depending on levels of sanity. I know it isn't up to much at this stage, but its been planned more than most other things i build (was depressingly easy to do so i need to rethink my atitude to robotics methinks! ) and its really nothing special.
There probably are a few glaring flaws that i will find out once i have another propper think about it. As i might have said, i'm going to get it driving and moving first before i start on any nasty spinney items.

          cheers, harry.

(oh, few more odds and sods ordered: conecters, fuses etc)

EDIT: just found a bit of stainless steel bar which is almost exactly the right size, i'm just worryed its a tad thin at 10mm? what do you people recon?

Harry, that look fookin awesome! Please build this and destroy what ever I may create by that time!

that looks ridiculously good and dangerous.

                Re: Massacre - FW

That looks really cool but you might want to think about using smaller wheels to make the robot lower to bring the blade closer to the ground so the bar won't go over the top of other robots? Or you could put the blade at an angle or have wedges on all sides so robots drive up into the blade.
I would be worried about using 10mm mild steel but stainless may be strong enough but you may find yourself hammering the blade back into shape after fights with vertical/drum spinners

                  Re: Massacre - FW

                  cheers Matt & Lewis

Max- i'm trying to get the bar as close to the floor as i can, but i can only go so far. I also don't particularly want to have to hammer the bar back into shape much. if i go for the 10mm stainless (and probably will anyway) i will go for a flat bar instead of the shaped one i have there
there will probably be skirts round the sides and a ground scraping wedge at the front to try and lure the real flat pushers up onto the bar.

                  thanks.

                    Re: Massacre - FW

Do the wheels need to stick out of the top? Presumably you'll be using ML for non full combat anyway so maybe better keeping them small and covered to prevent you from clipping them if the bar does have some bend in it. If your worried about it being too thin you could maybe weld on some reinforcement on the top, like a thinner bar, to strengthen it and maybe attempt to increase its chances of being able to self right.

                      Re: Massacre - FW

                      Looks good

I'd personally ditch the double wheels only having 4 not 8

I'm presuming here but have you worked the gearbox out for the weapon? If you haven't id imagine you'd be able to save some vertical space there and get the blade a bit lower

                      Look forward to the pics

                        Re: Massacre - FW

                        Long time and little progress.
Changed the design a bit, is now a bit wider and a couple of glaring flaws have been sorted out, just waitng for more to become aparant.
Today I made a start on the wedge on the front, a bit of 6mm aluminum with 6 bits of 12mm nylon bolted to it, actual wedge will be a 2mm Ti, same as the baseplate this whole front wedge will be atached using 4 M10 bolts and aditional aluminum angle tapped to M4. Bulkheads will be 2 layers of 15mm hpde with 6m alu bolted to them

Still need to find some material for the bar. Considering Ti but that has proven difficult to find.
                        Thanks.

                          *dusts off thread*

Well it was pretty clear I had no idea what i was doing when i started this, and still don't tbh but progress has been made.
material for the bar has arrived and i just stuck it on the top to see what it would look like. Looks okay to me. Haven't started on the weapon yet as i was getting the drive in semi working order. Some hideously bad ideas are at play here I feel but should be a wonderful learning experience

                          plain robot:

                          mock up of weapon

It's better than last year at any rate

                            Looking good man.

Quick question, is this the design based off one of mine that I let you use or one of your own?

                            Still looking good
