Find a local metal suppliers, they will usually have a trade desk, if you tell them what you're doing they will often help out. In a metal merchant you will pay about the same for a 7meter length for what you would get for 1meter in B&Q.

    • So finally decided i should get this robot built since it's been almost 6 years since i started and i have almost everything i need. Progress was non-existant after my last post because i didnt have the funds to buy any more stuff for the robot, so i decided to leave it until i did, which is now.

We (me and my brother) have decided to build it out of HDPE or another form of plastic instead of metal because of how much easier and cheaper it will hopefully be. Parts wise, appart from little bits I think we have almost everything we need except new batteries for the axe because the current ones are far too big and heavy.
Progress wont start until at least Easter though as i'm at university now, but at least that gives me plenty of time to plan things and do it right this time.

      • Ran into a slight drawback as the motor for the axe doesnt turn smooth anymore and has a lot of play in it. I have another, but i think i will replace it for a more powerful and reliable one. I've also somehow lost my axe sprocket, chain and bearings and receiver, but those may turn up at some point.
Made a cardboard model of what i think it will look like. It will probably end up smaller once i get all the parts together and finalize the design. We are kind of tempted to make it 4 wheel drive, but i dont think we would have the weight available and it may just make things overly complex.

Quick question, do you guys think 6mm HDPE for the base and 8mm for the sides, top and bulkheads would be ok?

Heres my design. Imagine the scoop has a cutout for the axe, since i couldnt work out how to do it in sketchup....

        • half-pipe = verti spinner heaven.

Flat sides = any spinner heaven.

I kept the sides flat so it's easier to build, but I suppose it's not much more difficult to angle them. i think i will also change the scoop to a ramp or something a bit more practical.

              • Thanks thats quite interesting, i never really thought slanted armour did anything but redirect hits. Think i will do some more research into it and redesign the robot. Building wont start until i have free time in Easter, so i have plenty of time to settle on a design.
