    Maybe I just need to use a different type of wood, or discard my edge-tapping construction methods in favour of an aluminium angle approach (probably the more sensible option). It's not something I'll have time to give attention to, but come the next event that you can run your robot at, I'll see if I can muster up a more structurally sound robot to give you something to play with

      I think the problem with wooden robots is that you still have to pay for all the electronics and internals and weapon so you might as well pay a little bit more for plastic armour as well and Get a really good competitive robot.

        It's been a while. RogueTwo Robots stuff took a back seat after the Robots Live event in Edinburgh as most of my focus turned to Scot-Bots stuff. However now that we've got the kits up and running and I'm nearly done making arena walls, I've started turning attention back to my robots.

        Just back in from rebuilding Drumroll. After Edinburgh it needed a new baseplate as the 3mm ali chequer-plate was dented and warped, so it got swapped for 3mm steel instead; much sturdier. The GR01s have been removed and traditional drills fitted again. Main reason being that I couldn't get them to run nice and freely ever since I took them apart to clean them out and re-assembled them. If I tightened the screws too much, the gears would rub and grind horribly, and if I loosened them, the ring gear would start to slip - I couldn't seem to find a happy medium. Plus they were so rigid when bolted onto the chassis that shocks probably went straight through them and contributed to the above issues.

        Going back to drills gives a bit of flex in the drive setup to reduce shocks and hopefully keep the drives lasting longer. Ultimately though, I think 125mm diameter wheels are at the upper limit for being directly attached to drill shafts. The first Drumroll ran on ~80mm wheels and I barely had to perform maintenance, whereas Drumroll II usually needs drive train maintenance every event. So in future, I'll probably use timing belts and pulleys to transfer drive to a wheel rotating on an axle.

        Carcinus is now an empty shell. The chassis is in a poor state after several alterations. Its last run out was at the Scot-Bots Westerton gala day, where it became blindingly obvious (if it wasn't already) that it couldn't do anything when it had a robot in its claws. So in order to be more effective, and to put on more controlled demonstrations at Scot-Bots events, I'm going to be changing it to a grabber/lifter. Got a rough sketch to work to:

        It uses a GLA-S actuator which will be attached to the lifting mechanism that was in Reaver, pitched at an angle. The entire weapon mech will probably weigh in at around 6kg so it's going to be tight fitting everything else in. Hoping to make some progress on it next week while I'm on holiday.

                That sketch looks absolutely fantastic mate! Upon closer inspection of it, it reminds me very much of Crusher from Series 3 of Robot Wars, except a much more cooler looking version. And it has tracks to boot, my track fan inside is hoping that this does get made! :P

                  I had to do a bit of Wiki-ing/Youtube-ing to familiarise myself with Crusher. I can indeed see the resemblance, although hopefully I can get mine to drive faster.
                  It'll be difficult to get it all working together effectively and within the weight, but it should be a good challenge. Not much progress made on it yet; being ill has pushed back the Scot-Bots arena welding so that will be getting done tomorrow and then I can start looking at this in detail. Actuator has arrived though, nommy goodness.

                  Ceri, I would normally consider a name change, but it took ages to come up with a name for my last robot so I'm just going to stick with Carcinus. People are only just learning how to pronounce it anyway so may as well stick with it

                    Started fiddling around with a pile of parts for the new Carcinus yesterday. Not a huge amount to show but gives a rough idea of the overall look. Decided that it's too different from Carcinus to carry on the name after all, so will look into something new name-wise, or might revert to Reaver again.

                    Just used cardboard for now to play around with different shapes and pivot/fixing points for the claw and see what works best. Bought a 50mm stroke GLA-S actuator but it's a bit short for letting me open the claw up further. I was going to get a 100mm one instead, but looking at the pictures I just need to shift the pivot down a bit and it'll be fine.

                    Want to get the whole weapon unit sorted before starting on the rest, just so I know how much weight will be spare. Should keep me entertained over Christmas.

                        Rrrrrrg, so coooool! Can't wait to see how this develops, will be really nice to see a machine so different from the norm!

                        For the claw, instead of moving the pivot point down, which will reduce the gripping power, why not make it so it doesn't close as far, so you can open it further? I realise it may look cooler, but it might have to grip a bit of a robot that thin 2% of the time. How often is the body of a robot thinner than say, 70mm? I reckon you could gain 5cm of open-position, without losing any power, by doing this. In the rare situation of being drawn against a pancake of a robot, you could bolt on a claw extension and voil¡.

                        Anyway, look forward to it, not that I have to tell you but do keep us posted. :P

                            I have no idea if the tracks will work well, or at all. They're the same ones as Ewan has for Flux. I just fancied trying them out to see. Should be easy enough to revert to wheels if the tracks are an epic fail, although it will lose several cool points.

                            I was considering that Ellis. Carcinus's claws never closed all the way either for the same reason as you mentioned. A reduction in crushing force in order to achieve more travel won't be too bad a thing though, as it just needs to have enough force to hold a robot between the two jaws. The actuator's only rated at 230kg max so it won't be a devastating crusher by any stretch.

                            Think I'll probably do what Kenny has done on Cobalt though, having a few different mounting points that can be altered for speed, force or travel.

                            I shall indeed post progress as it happens, quite excited about this build. Just a shame the one driver, one robot rule means I can't drive both this and Drumroll in competitive battles. Might rig the weapon controls up on a different TX so I can still be involved in its fights

                                Old-school Tonka bulldozer toys on eBay. Pretty hard to come by though, I found one but haven't seen any more in a while (though I've not been looking that much).
