  • Team Shock's new robots

We have finally got round to starting our new robot- Whirlwind.

I have had most of the parts since January but other things have got in the way of building it.

The basic layout which I am going for can be seen here http://s881.photobucket.com/albums/ac13 ... d%20build/

    So here are the stats,

    Weight: hopefully less than 13.6kg
Weapon: Full Pressure flipper with a 60mm bore 80mm stroke ram, 1/2 valve and 2 buffer tanks.
Armour: 5mm HDPE on a steel frame with 10mm HDPE base.
Drive: Either 2x MFA motors or 2x Drills
    Speedo: Scorpion XL
    Batteries: 24v Ni-Mh
    Radio: DX6 with BR6000.

We are hoping to get it done by Reading and I'll get some more pics uploaded as work continues.

That's a very nice looking setup Will, simple and neat. Makes me want to build a flipper now
    Good luck with the build

      Re: Team Shock's new robots

Not a lot has happened with Whirlwind recently, we got the last part the other day so it is all ready to build. I have designed the frame and it should have been started on today but the weather had other ideas and stopped us from welding it. If the weather allows we might have it going for maidstone but it will be tight.

In other news I have started work on a new antweight. I decided to go for a spinner and so far it's coming along quite nicely

      Name: Tempest
Weight: Should be under 150g with some weight saving
      Length: 9cm
      Width: 11cm
      Height: 3cm
Weapon: 40gram Spinning Drum running off a brushless outrunner motor
      Drive: 2x 30:1 Solarbotics motors
      ESC: Peter's option A board
      Rx: AR500e
      Battery: 250mAh 2 cell LiPo
      Armour: HDPE of various thicknesses

            Re: Team Shock's new robots

We have finally finished Whirlwind (just in time for Barnsley)

We managed to test the flipper last week but that caused a couple of problems (the main one being that it bent the 3mm thick steel arm) Since then we have added extra braces and it no longer bends and should hopefully work (or self destruct)

Here are the stats of the finished robot

            Weight: Around 13.6kg
            Length: 45cm
            Width: 50cm
            Height: 20cm
Weapon: Full Pressure Flipper with a 60mm Bore, 80mm Stroke 'Kenny Special' ram
Drive: 2x drills with 100mm Blue wheels
            Armour: 3mm HDPE & 3mm Steel
            Speedo: Sabretooth 10A
Batteries: 14.4 Ni-Mh for drive, 24v for valve
            Radio: Spektrum DX5e with BR6000

              Re: Team Shock's new robots

That looks good is it using the chassis of Aftershock or just built similarly?

                Re: Team Shock's new robots

                Thanks Joey.

It is a completely separate robot to aftershock, we just made it in a similar way.

                    Re: Team Shock's new robots

I'd get those exposed wheels protected somehow, but it looks nice.

                      Re: Team Shock's new robots

hi will, if you swap the elbow fittings for sweaped fittings you would increase the flow from the buffer tank just a small tip and for not much money

                        Re: Team Shock's new robots

After a couple of fights with Whirlwind it became clear that there were one or two small issues with the power of the flipper which has resulted in breaking 3 flipper arms which went like this

Arm 1: Bent after 3 fights at Barnsley

Arm 2: Bent during testing before Whitwick

Arm 3: Snapped in half during its first flip at Whitwick

So we spent today making yet another flipper arm and this one looks like it might finally work

Here is a quick video of us testing it:
                        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzyboiXXfqU

Also in other news, Aftershock has had a few upgrades including a brand new flipper arm and we also have 2 new antweights Inertia & Tesla

Pics of both can be found here

                            Re: Team Shock's new robots

Well about time I did another update.

Whirlwind has finally started to work as intended, the new flipper arm survived 3 fights at Nottingham without any sign of bending. The flipper seemed to have plenty of power which was clear when self righting (4 somersaults in the air is pretty impressive but can be a bit annoying when the battery comes out)

Also I have finally got round to sorting out a new team website which has been desperately needed (I haven't updated the last one since 2008!) so here it is

                            http://www.teamshock.kk5.org

there are a couple of bits which are just updating but the whole thing should be done tonight.
