  • motor mounts

ok folks just throwing this out there to get a second opinion im going to be 2mm hdpe to make motor mounting plates but i was wondering does anyone know of a template out there that can be used to drill the screw holes in the right place as previous attempts have been mostly just a waste of material so any cunning tricks would be appreciated

The spacing is 17mm (assuming the popular 25mm motor breed). Can you drill the holes in some wood/something relatively thick, get it good, and use that from then on as a template? Can place the piece over the final part and use it to guide the drill bit. Just put a screw in each hole after drilling it before moving to the next to guarantee alignment.

Alternatively you could look at 1:1 scale printing a 2D drawing and using that as a template.

Might be worth picking up a centre punch and some measuring tools: cheapo digital calipers and a little metal ruler, possibly a scribe.

Just buy these, or simply tie wrap your motors to a base plate.

My robots all use cable ties without any problems.

It's quick to do as well lol stuff the motor roughly where you want it, drill four small holes and voila! Obviously this then gives an inaccurate finish. To counter this bung some sticky Velcro on the bottom of the mount to hold it where you want and then use cable ties to take the weight. This is obviously a bit simple, but it's worked for every beetle battle I've been in so far. Wheels and gearboxes have taken direct hits from spinners and still not broken.

Can get some pictures if it helps. Mounting them properly is better if you can be accurate, but I'm not so just come up with other easy ways. In a similar way use jubilee clips for drill motors in feathers.

Can anyone suggest a source for wheels that fit the output shaft of the popular 25 mm, 1000 rpm, ebay motor?

What i've done before is take the faceplate off one of the gearboxes and used that to make a template for the mounting pattern, it's just about the easiest method seeing as you'll already have the gearboxes to hand.

Also John, Shockbots is now 3d printing wheels specifically to fit the 25mm motors. IIRC they're about £2 each.

i tend to do the same thing with the face plate to mark out the mounting holes but i did find these on ebay

It's worth mentioning that I have stock of 25mm motor mounting brackets on the way. They will be similar to the ones above but a little thicker and aluminium, so countersunk screws can be used (will be included). ETA is a couple of weeks from now.

I wasn't going to push those here much as I figured in many cases we prefer to make our own mounts, but I will post on the Ranglebox thread when they're available.

Have now got my Shockbots wheels and very nice they look too. As soon as Will knew that I had not received the wheels he produced some and mailed them the next day.

Saw some in the flesh and they were good, straight push fit without needing shaft adapters for the 4mm d type shafts.

Yeah the shockbots wheels are pretty nice, Will recommended that i use a bit of super glue to make sure the wheel stays put and to prevent the d bore rounding out. They're really light and nice and grippy though.
