  • Tyre Treads

I've just made up some 50mm wheels for some beetleweights. Was wondering what people use as tyre treads on purpose made wheels?

    Cheers

    Hi Andy,

I was wondering the same. I was planning to use a bit of hex aluminium for a hub, a 3D printed wheel and some casting rubber poured into the wheel hub which I incorporated a former for the rubber mould.

I was at the time of posting thinking of using the rc car type hubs with an hope wheel. These just use a brass hex on the shaft fixed to an Ali hub. Pretty easily available on eBay and a starret cutter and a skim in the lathe you're there. I did these and was just wondering on suitable tread. Kind of fixed on some thick elastic bands but decided to use something else anyway.

Think a lot of people just buy their wheels to be honest.

Banebots wheels were popular but from what I remember they've stopped producing them, so people seem to just be going for hdpe and bike tread, or Colson performa wheels. Seen a few RC car wheels too, mostly banebots though since people have still got supplies of them.

Provided that central hub holds up that should be great. What fill and wall settings did you use on the print?

                  print settings

                  perimeters 3
                  fill 1.0 rectilinear.
                  material ABS
                  0.35mm nozzle
It took about 2 hours to print.

I've been wondering why the grub screws haven't turned up yet, but it turns out that I haven't ordered them yet. Doh.
