  • Does anyone know a UK stockist of the 1000rpm gear motors?

I ordered some 1000rpm gearmotors for a tenner on ebay late last night at the end of my beetle weight spending spree. I've been back to double check everything and it's saying they're coming from China and will be absolutely ages. Does anyone know of a UK stockist I can order from and when the others arrive I'll keep them as spares?

Edit: Just found absolutely everything you could ever need to build a beetle at robot bits

    https://robotbits.com/robot-parts/motors-gearboxes.html

Loads of people may have known about this but they do the 4mm shaft adapters to run any pololu wheels, you just need to pick your combination. Wanted to stick this up in case it helps anyone in future.

My gearmotors only took about 2 weeks to arrive, I didn't know about that site so that's a massive help to me. Nice find!

Yeah and the 4mm shaft adapters use metric threads as opposed to some stupid American thread you can't get bolts for.

The 25mm gearmotors Robotbits sell are unsuitable for drive motors in beetles; they're 34:1 whereas the ones we use (1000rpm) are typically 6 or 4.5:1 inside.

That and they're going on 3x pricier than buying from Ebay China. Like Sam my latest order arrived inside 2 weeks.

Struth glad you pointed that out! Will hang on and wait for other motors then. I was sure I'd read somewhere that the 1000rpm motors were 20:1?

Nope, I believe typically 4.5:1 depending on manufacturer. The 1200rpm variations are 4:1 and the 500rpm models 9.3:1, again depending a little.

Ok that's good to know, I have piles of stuff on its way as I'm trying to get to the beetle event on the 28th Feb so cacking it that stuff won't turn up in time. Chassis is built and now literally just waiting for running gear / electrics.

I think Maplins might do them as a final resort but they are certainly not cheap.

Had a look and you're right. They have them but they look like twenty quid a pop.

Yes not cheap, only worth considering if you are desperate.

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/271768203447 found a UK stockist of the 1200rpm motors, no idea if they're any good though.

I just ordered some 500rpm motors to replace 1000rpm versions in a project. Once they arrive I should have 8-10 up for grabs. Will post here when/if they are freed up.
