  • couple of questions

    hi
im currently designing a featherweight and have decided that rather than spend alots of money on a design that might work i want to build a beetleweight version first to test out if my theory is any good and also get my head around combat robots couple of questions that i have though:
when i last touched rc stuff 2.6 ghz was a dream of the super rich so what set is the best/cost effective for use over multiple bots without bankrupting me

i am going to order a few of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3307516820...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT for drive motors what are the recommended wheels for these

i only have access to basic power tools and dont have thread tappers so whats the best way to actually build the thing as im guessing glue would be a dumb idea

feel free to call me daft i probably am missing something
    thanks muchly

I just use generic foam wheels. Save the gearboxes from shocks. Get a cheap 2.4ghz transmitter off hobbyking or ebay or something. Orange RX's work well with spectrum or other DSM2 transmitters. DX6i is probably best if you're going to have multiple bots.

Get yourself a set of taps. They aren't expensive and are hella useful. Or you could use http://ranglebox.com/m4-threaded-bar/ this stuff and save yourself a lot of hassle. I have some lengths for beetle use and its pretty great.

Glue is a dumb idea yes

thanks for that i have put the transmitter on my watch list for after i have been paid this is going to like a daft question but have you got any pics of how you used that threaded bar as i cant picture how to use it in my head

Wheels with a 4mm bore you can push and glue on, but adding a setscrew is better. I printed my own hubs and used Fingertech foam tires from technobots. I'll probably turn some out of aluminum or hdpe soon to replace them.

                  NFI on comps

Nearest beetle event to you will be Whitwick in Leicester, unless someone takes the beetle arena to the National Museum of Flight event for me.

thanks for that thankfully after some googling im only a 4 hour drive from whitwick so its not impossible for me to make an apperance.
please dont think less of me when i ask this but what is a set screw and are they easly obtained
harry you mentioned getting myself a set of taps for threads there appears to be about a million sets on ebay any sudgestion as to what isnt a waste of money or the wrong size
                      hate being a newbie

                        Ok for sure.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_screw Called grubscrews over here. To use them the way I meant they would be going on a shaft to transmit the motion.

On my hub here you can see a small screw that goes through the hub and presses down on the shaft when tightened. Because of this pressing down it moves when the shaft does. Its not a great method because (unlike in that image) you need to use a fairly large screw for the shaft diameter to get a decent result.

Its kinda simple when you think about it. For m5 bolts you need an m5 tap, for m4 bolts and m4 tap etc etc. M4 is a decent size for beetles I'd say without knowing too much about your design specifics. You'll need to drill a 3.5mm hole to tap for m4. You can use this or similar charts to know what kind of pilot holes you need to use for different threads: http://www.shender4.com/metric_thread_chart.htm

Taps are just an ebay search away, as are drill bits.

What kind of materials are you planning to work with can I ask?

Giant Shark does a 2.4 GHz transmitter, with receiver, for £27. Works well for me.

thanks for that grub screws make perfect sence to me as i have used them before diffrent name threw me totally im planing to work in hdpe mainly because i dont have metal work capabilities and i used to build rc model boats so am used to working with plastics though in a slightly thinner level though i think the principles remain the same i have been looking at a few videos of various beetleweights and saw a bot called anvil and i was wondering with it havving what looked like a fully screwed down metal body how did they access the removable link as the design i have in mind might end up having similar features all be it in plastic and i dont see how the link is accessable my only thought is that you can turn it over and it has no baseplate but i was under the impression that you had to disable it before touching it
                            excuse the essay lol
