  • First antweight bot

    Hi all,

Ive decided to get into robot building with little experience of any robotics but although ive been watching robotwars since season 1 the latest season has captivated me and though i'd give it a go and get into the antweight bots first.

I own a 3D printer so will be printing as much as I can, but I wonder if anyone could help me with a few parts.

So I'm thinking of a spinner, I know this is dangerous for a beginner but will take all precautions etc.

What geared motors should I use for the drive system? and where to buy them?
I will be buying the redcon 2204's for the spinner, but I think this will require a 3S lipo whereas the drive will be 2s? is that right?

    Any help appreciated.

A redcon can more than happily run on 2S, it's the setup I use on all my spinners.

For motors and ESC's this topic may be of interest: http://robotwars101.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2187

Now I'm going to advise against a spinner first but for a different reason: They're terrible to practice and learn to drive with. Antweights are a weight class that really amplifies driving skill and spinners just aren't great at teaching this. Plus the difficulty of just driving round your desk pushing stuff with a spinner...

That's some sound advice, while I decide if I want a spinner as my first ant, I've been trying to find out what drive motor setup to get and where to buy, I came across a thread on rw101 about Rory's kits I've sent him an email but had no reply so not sure if he's still making them. Any tips on what motors and controllers to get?

Rory's definitely still making them, but as far as I know he's swamped with orders since RW came back. Just be a bit patient, and I'm sure he'll get to it. Otherwise you can try the DasMikro from banggood - though you'll have to do some soldering yourself. http://www.banggood.com/2S6A-Micro-D...p-1032413.html

Please note if you're recommending the Das Mikro ESC you should cover the fact it lacks centre braking and this needs to be modded in. Centre braking is a big must have thing in antweights.

          See this thread: http://robotwars101.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2504

And in particular this post for the fix: http://robotwars101.org/forum/viewto...&t=2504#p57290

Would this be a good choice for a battery?

Fine for power, might be a little big depending on your design.

Any recommendations, trying to get as much from hobbyking as I can, but if there is a better supplier then i'll gladly use it

This is the one I use in my spinner, lasts about 10 minutes from tests.

They are not instock at the moment, and cant tell me when they'll be back, What would a good replacement option be?

You could try this, and solder a different connector on if this one's not ideal. It's basically the same thing as above.
